ok I can take it, does my Nasi have a too-short neck??

Icelandics evolved with short necks.

I believe it's only more recently that higher set and longer necks are being
strived for as a goal in breeding.

gee good question... with me and the big Foxtrotter and TWH necks/heads
people are always saying I hate those big heads and look at that neck but
for me it doesn't matter what a horse looks like as long as the horse is
comfortable to ride. I always assumed the neck was a balanceing tool in some
way for a horse and acted differently for different gaits but...essentially
it was just something for people to either like or dislike esthetically. I
don't happen to like that bull dog head on some quarter horses for
example and I'm a real fan of a roman nosed horse... stuff like
that

So piggy eyes are a joke? Tonight I kept looking at Orri's eyes from
every angle (he was just gelded last summer) and they didn't look piggy no
matter how I looked at them

In this area, they are called pig eyes and no, they aren't a joke - but it
could be a regional nickname though for all I know. I think what it
actually is, is some sort of fatty deposit above or around the eyes - or
maybe they are some other sort of tissue. It's not that the eyes themselves
are smaller, but the fat (whatever) makes them look a little smaller. I'm
sure the shape and the size of horse's original eyes has a big influence on
how small the deposit makes the eyes look. My App was gelded at 6, and it's
fairly easy to see on him. But, of course, he has the funky Appaloosa eyes,
where the schelera (sp) is white, so people are naturally more drawn to look
at his eyes. I don't think I would even notice it about Melnir's eyes,
except that I've seen it on Joe and I know to look for it. I've never seen
it be terribly noticeable on any Icelandic, but you can often see it if you
really look. It's just another gender-related physical trait that many
stallions may have. A more developed neck is another.

LOL! I'll have to tie up his forelock and take photos of his
eyes--maybe then I'll be able to see the piggy look. :D

Seriously, I don't think Nasi's neck is very short for an Icelandic - and I
say that from having seen him in person more than from pictures. What I DO
remember thinking about him is that his neck is fairly high-set - not a bad
thing - and I think it shows more development, typical of a colt gelded
rather late - the so-called stallion neck. And, no Janice, I don't think
you have a stallion neck. :)

Nope, I'm very aware of those. Joe has them, and even Melnir to a slight
degree. Does GB have them? I never noticed them in his pictures.

well, I was kidding about no neck... his neck looks fine to me too...

Me too. And, when it comes to gaited pleasure horses, like Icelandics, can
someone tell me what important traits we should look for in a neck, and why?
How important in the neck? What are the biggest neck flaws or warning signs
to look for? And is there such thing as a too-long neck? I have my
thoughts, but I'd like to hear what others say.
