As a breeder, I'm MUCH more worried that any foals born here might be very pacey than if they may be slightly to the trotty side. Of course, there's always an element of "roulette" in any breeding, and of course, I AIM for foals whose preferred gaits fall smack in the middle of the soft range. But, if there were ever a foal born here who's too trotty, well, I know that most of the horses in the USA are w/t/c horses, so I know I could find him/her a suitable home, without forcing or faking the gaits.
