I am not an endurance rider or member of any endurance organization,
but I am proud, as an owner of McCurdy Plantation Horses, that one won
a national endurance ride a few years back.

I am proud that he competed as a gaited horse in a normal endurance
ride, competing with horses of every breed.

This just sounds like more stupid biglick crapola to me. sigh. It never ends.

I have a hard time understanding why anyone (and this man is not alone)
would want to change something as good as an Icelandic.

Yes. We do own an Icelandic cross and she seems to be a very nice
individual, but we bought her in spite of her breeding, not because of it.

yes...he's on one of my lists. he's looking to make a new breed. i
thought PF & Ice Ponies (??) some cross...looking for racking horses
to use as foundation horses. IMHO...he's not thinking right. the rack
is not a good gait for endurance, as one should not hold a horse in
gait for that amount of time ans distance

Penny, what list is this from? I couldn't find it on GaitedEnduranceRiders.

Any of you guys heard anything about this? I am curious why they think that
much action will be useful to an endurance horse.

Yes. It's been cussed and discussed on the Gaited Enduance list. I haven't
paid much attention, but if I remember the organizers have limited (perhaps
no?) endurance experience.

As you know, Penny, most endurance riders are looking for an economy of
action because these horses have quite a lot of ground to cover and those
who fare best are the ones who do not expend any more energy than they have
to.

I have only been riding Limited Distance for five seasons, but the folks I
condition with have years and years of experience and many miles. There are
lots of things that go into the make up of a successful endurance horse. I
almost think I'd start my list with temperment.

Beats me - I thought it was common knowledge that knee action is a waste of
energy, exactly what you don't want an endurance horse doing...

Besides, in those videos, look how far back those MEN are sitting on those
horses. Do people really think a horse's back can survive being ridden for
50+ miles when something poking them in the loins? I'm not sure how anyone
expects that kind of riding to translate positively into endurance riding.

Number one: Rack / tolt is not a functional gait for endurance. Number
two: front leg action is not functional for anything.

What about fighting the bit? do they want a horse that does that for miles
on end? or did they notice that?

Stan's videos are a great resource for being able to see the problematic
areas.

I don't get it. WHO wants a horse that tolts like that? And for use in
endurance?
