I pulled 2 quills this morning that the vet had missed.

the little hedgehogs were somewhat popular a while back-they were cute but
more of a novelty i think. they had spines but didn't shoot them-just be
careful when picking them up :)

I really wanted one. They're the cutest things, but their sale has been

Welcome to nature. All things considered, I would
still rather have a dog quilled by a porcupine than
sprayed by a skunk. I suggest you invest in a set of
hemostatic pliers (the kind that clamp and lock) for
ease in quill removal. In case of skunk, keep some
peroxide and baking soda on hand. Or, maybe just put
up a fence for the dog

P.S. We saw a porky this weekend while walking the
dogs. One on the leash, one off but I caught the old
one in time.

Then I guess it doesn't matter the breed, sex or age of a dog, if it
sees a porcupine it'll go after it.

Well, some only go after them once. Some never seem to learn. Depends
on the category into which your dog falls :)

I have always been fascinated by porcupine. They are really
interesting looking creatures and we only get to see them rarely here.
Hope you come to a truce of sorts.

Not just dogs, either. I had to pull a quill out of the soft little nose
of a yearling filly.

I looked out across the fields one day and saw our neighbor's heifers
standing in a complete circle, noses in, tails out. Not being a cow person,
I thought that was pretty cute.

They had to bring them all in to the barn later and run them through a chute
to pull the quills out of their faces. Poor things.

Aw, that's sad!

When I was walking through the pasture I saw the porcupine from a
distance, it just looked like a brown tuft of grass--when I got closer
I realized what it was, but it looked so calm and soft so I went a bit
closer--then BAM, up went the quills and it didn't look so soft
anymore.

Hubby put her in the 'Dumb Dog' category, but since she's a Wire Fox
Terrier I suppose she can't help herself being bred to go after
rodents.

When I was a kid, my dad stepped on one in the middle
of the night. We were visiting my grandparents home
(in the woods). He had insomnia and went for a late
night walke. I was staying up late reading a book and
he showed me his shoe full of quills. He said they
both were surprised!

Are they the same family as beavers/badgers/ferrets (mustelidae)?

They are rodents. Family- Hystricidae (just learned that). They are
distantly related to hedgehogs.

Beavers are rodents as well and are the only living members of the
family -Castoridae.
