Re: [IceHorses] duett saddles
would extended bars make it longer?? One problem with icelandics is if you find a saddle wide enough its too long for the short backed ones. Janice-- even good horses have bad days sometimes.

That's funny. ;) Maybe they should rename them the 'Walking Horse Saddle', because they've fit several TWH I've trained. My Thornhill fits many horses, it's an X-wide though. They quit making the icelandic saddle style you had and started making one with extended bars. I had someone buy an Ascot Icelandic with the 10" Gullet and I never liked it, but it fit his witherless extremely wide horse well and he liked it. It rubbed me raw in places for some reason. I am too :) and I got my wide tree thornhill from you Steph. >>I sold you a Thorogood, not a Thornhill. Thorogood is a synthetic. ;) Come to think of it, Janice, wasn't that "Icelandic saddle" that you had years ago and hated, a Thornhill? Could that be what you were thinking about? >>> It's not just width, but angle of the bars, length, sway, etc... That's true, but with Icelandic's, often you can't get past the width limitation. It works great on my wide horses BUT Tivar, who HAS to have a treeless. Some saddles just arent wide enough for a horse built like a propane gas tank! Also, on a long trail ride, after two hours that thornhill seat is killing me, but duh, its a dressage saddle, why would I expect it to be a plush trail ride... My Fox appears to be as wide and similar withers as Tivar, but he does great with the thornhill so I dont know why it perches on Teev, but I guess he is saddle width impaired :) And since he is icelandic and many icies are similar I thought I would bring this up. Re: [IceHorses] duett saddles
Thanks. There's one on eBay right now for $500, but it's the Companion. I sure have loved my nearly antique Stubben. It lasted forever and I did every kind of riding you can think of in it. Nancy
Re: [IceHorses] duett saddles
Kaaren Jordan said someone on this list has tried a Duett saddle. Karen? Someone else? Want to give me your opinion? I had one for a while - an Encore dressage. It was a nice enough saddle, but Sina outgrew it just like she did all the other treed saddles. One good thing is that they do come in really wide trees. They are not Stubben quality saddles by a good shot, but I'm afraid we really don't have many options in super-wide saddles. Beware of what the distributor may tell you if you deal directly with her. She's...different. She told my friend that she would absolutely NOT be able to get her gelding to "tolt" in one of the Encore dressage models, that she HAD to get one of the flat seated Icelandic models. Uh... huh? We asked her how much Icelandic horse experience she had and the answer was none. Seems like she'd met one or two, but that was about it. But, someone had told her that, so she was repeating it as gospel. Thankfully, we knew better. My friend and I were desparate for saddles, and we each ended up with a dressage model...and our horses gaited just fine in it. Well, until Sina outgrew it, then the pacing started again...Thank goodness my long awaited first Sensation arrived before she outgrew the Encore! Another thing to watch out for: the distributor used to push the "Companion Trail" models for Icelandic's. At that time, they all had extended panels. We got one to try when we demoed the two dressage models that we bought, and the stupid extended panels were too long for every Icelandic we tried it on - even the bigger horses like Bragi and Falki. It bridged badly on most. They were WAY too long for Sina - she could only just barely make do with the 17.5" seat I bought, a model WITHOUT the extended panels. The one she outgrew was a 36cm tree. At the time I bought it, I had several young horses (4-6 year olds) and that was ok for many of them. But, they kept maturing and finally last spring I realized it wasn't a great fit any more for any of them, so I sold it. If you want to consider one, check ebay. The retail on mine was about $1150. It was like new when I sold it, and I only got about $550 I think. At any rate, I took a loss. I've seen them on ebay in the $400-600 range a lot. They don't seem to hold their values as well as some others. For what it's worth, I thought the Encore was a comfy saddle for me - until I was spoiled by Sensations that is... :) Karen Thomas, NC
Re: [IceHorses] duett saddles
I don't think I can because at least some of the time Stephanie is going to have to use whatever saddle I choose and she is very VERY unstable. Kaaren thinks (and I agree) that the Sensation is going to roll under her. I did get to ride in the Sensation one time during a brief demo (weather and other stuff intervened) I liked where it put my leg and I thought it was very comfortable. I was a little concerned about the type of riding we do, but one of the women we ride with is a true endurance rider who rides huge numbers of miles and she and her friend both ride treeless saddles. The friend seems to do fine, but Mary has trouble mounting and dismounting and every time we have been out with her recently, her saddle has been tilting to the right. She is very aware of this, but can't seem to fix it. Nancy
