 Hi,
Thanks for your help, but I am aware of the command line and
configuration file ways of setting up Static IPs. But that is counter-

for a way of setting up static IPs using network manager, but all I
could find were recommendations to uninstall it before following the
methods you suggested. It seemed like a bug back when NM 0.7 was
introduced in Ubuntu- but it is surprising that this problem still
persists even after a full year. So I was wondering if I was missing
In Fedora, in the 'Network configuration' utility, you can set a static
IP for an interface, and then deselect the 'Controlled by
NetworkManager' option.
See if you have something similar.

Hi,
I have the problem solved, albeit partially.

Thanks for the very valuable info ശ്യാം ചേട്ടാ. I was able to
identify the 'Network configuration' as 'system-config-
network' [ http://fedoramobile.org/Members/MrHappy/system-config-network
]. Unfortunately, it isn't available even on Ubuntu repository.
Besides, the page itself says, NetworkManager and system-config-
network do not handle support for static IP addressing very well.
Better support of static IP addresses is planned and in-progress for
NetworkManager in the future. So, I guess I will have to wait more.

How about using wicd as an alternate network manager ?

Sunil sir, thanks for the link - it proved most helpful in figuring
out the problem. All the while, I was trying to rename the 'Auto eth1'
connection and set its method from DHCP to manual. Seems that this is
not enough- you have to 'Add' a new connection and 'copy-paste' the
MAC address to it. This was exactly what പ്രസാദ് ചേട്ടന്‍ was
suggesting earlier -but I never even guessed that the problem was in
the way of editing connections. It may be a problem with the way NM
chooses the default profile.

That however doesn't solve my problems completely. NM assigns the
Static IP only after someone has logged in locally (this wasn't the
case with NM 0.6). On the other hand, I need static IP for remote SSH
login, possibly with no one locally logged in. So it seems that the
only option left to me is to deactivate NM for now and use text
configuration- until they fix it. Meanwhile, I will give WICD a try
and see if it fits my need. Thanks everyone, for the valuable help!

Gokul Das

Check if your firewall is blocking access (port 23, I believe).

That page seems to be written for Fedora 8. Static IP works fine with my
Fedora 10 now. I've been using static IP for a long time now.

2009-05-09 Thread Visakh

Hi,
Now I have Static IP too. The problem really is that it applies only
after someone logs in. But I need it soon after booting- so I can try
remote SSH. I am trying to get that to work. As a last resort, I am
going to disable network manager and try text configuration.
