[fsug-tvm] Re: Reliance GSM mobile internet

2009-09-02 Thread Srihari k

For aircel and airtel the number is *99***1#
I connect using wvdial and AIrcel GPRS.

I get a A modem hung up the phone (exit code =
16) error code when my aircel network denies network acces.

And following is the exact copy of my /etc/wvdial.conf for connecting
aircel GPRS with nokia via bluetooth::

[Dialer Defaults]
Init1 = AT+CGDCONT=1,IP,aircelgprs
Init2 = ATQ
Phone = *99***1#
Username =
Password =
New PPPD = yes
Modem = /dev/rfcomm0
Baud = 460800

Hope all these do help you in someway

2009-09-02 Thread Srihari k

Well, I didn't say that it has caused h/w problems. I only said that
it may have caused problems. Even if it did, it may not show up
immediately. It may cause a shortening of disk life, which is not
immediately apparent. Sudden disk power downs are always very
 traumatic.

[fsug-tvm] deleting an unused sandwich partition without trouble

2009-09-02 Thread Sebin Jacob
Hi,

I have a peculiar partition problem that should be dealt with. My partitions
are as follows:

Primary partitions

/dev/sda1 Windows TYPE=ntfs
/dev/sda2 Linux boot partition TYPE=ext2
/dev/sda3 Windows TYPE=ntfs

Extended partition

/dev/sda4

Logical partitions

/dev/sda5 ntfs
/dev/sda6 linux swap
/dev/sda7 lvm2pv over dm_crypt

The encrypted partition /dev/sda7 is aliased as physical volume
/dev/mapper/vgroup . The volume groups is partitioned as follows.

/dev/mapper/vgroup: TYPE=lvm2pv

/dev/mapper/vgroup-root: TYPE=ext3
/dev/mapper/vgroup-swap: TYPE=swap
/dev/mapper/vgroup-usr: TYPE=jfs
/dev/mapper/vgroup-var: TYPE=reiserfs
/dev/mapper/vgroup-opt: TYPE=xfs
/dev/mapper/vgroup-tmp: TYPE=xfs
/dev/mapper/vgroup-home: TYPE=ext4

when mounting the partitions, swap is mounted from the lvm,
/dev/mapper/vgroup-swap. I accidentally had kept a separate swap partition
outside the logical volume which is of no use now. It comes around 1.7 GB,
ie, 15% more than my RAM. I wanted to merge it with /dev/sda5, the ntfs
logical partition inside the extended partition. But normally, if i do so,
the encrypted partition /dev/sda7 will be automatically renamed as
/dev/sda6. As /dev/sda7 is currently a linux logical volume, this may create
a problem with booting my distro: Arch linux that I had build from base
(using kdemod4 as DE). So is there a way out to successfully delete
/dev/sda6 and merge it with /dev/sda5 without causing trouble to my GNU
system? If I specify partitions with its UUID is fstab, can I succeed in
doing so? Otherwise, it would take 2-3 days downloading installing and
tweaking the system for my use.

regards,
Sebin

[fsug-tvm] Filesystem got corrupted after filesystem check.........

2009-09-02 Thread Visakh

Hi,

On Sep 2, 1:58 pm, Srihari k harisult...@gmail.com wrote:
@gokul OMG OMG!!!you make me nerveous!!

Haha! Sorry for that! But remember that you are dealing with a
machine. It could fail anytime - be prepared always. Power system and
hard drives are especially worrying. Any part of the system can be
easily restored after a failure - except the data that represent your
hard work. As long as it is backed up with multiple copies, you don't
need to worry about anything.

@gokul i ran SMART and i was not smart enough to decode the
output. Please spare some time analysing the text that follows((Man do
it.. ITS my HARDDISk :) ))

Funny! In the industry, the hard drives are the devices that the
specialists care least about - even though the data in them is
considered most precious.

As for the SMART data, it is really easy to interpret. The
instructions are available in the second link I gave earlier. And
looking at your HDD data, looks like it is healthy for now. All the
parameters are above their minimum thresholds - meaning that the HDD
is safe for now.

There are 2 parameters you have to specially watch out for in the
future.

1. Seek error rate:
Lowest value recorded: 60 (out of 255)
Minimum threshold: 30 (out of 255)

2. Spin retry count:
Lowest value recorded: 100 (out of 255)
Minimum threshold: 97 (out of 255)

Both these parameters are 'Pre-fail' type. That means that if they
ever touch the minimum threshold or go below it, that indicates
impending drive failure. You will have to take emergency measures if
such a situation arises. Right now, both parameters are above the
threshold, but slowly creeping down towards it. Right now, these are
not a problem. But watch out for them in the long run (you can check
the data once in a month or two).

There is one another parameter, which if improved, can extend drive
life:

3. Air flow temperature (deg Celsius):
Lowest value recorded: 48 (out of 255) ~ 41 deg (highest
recorded).
Minimum threshold: 45 (out of 255)

This is an 'old-age' type parameter. If this value goes below the
threshold (ie, if the drive overheats), the drive performance and
health will start to degrade. Low value for this parameter indicates
poor air cooling condition. Improving cooling can improve life. If you
feel like correcting this condition, you will have to consult a
specialist - unfortunately, I am incompetent to comment on it.

Hope I was able to address some of your concerns. Wish you good luck
with drives and data in the future!

Regards,
Gokul Das
