2010-02-20 Thread Anish A
After long hours, the mobile heats up. I am looking for a heat sink or fan
like solution, so that
my mobile remains cool. :) any suggestions?

I have found a solution. I have remove the back cover of the phone and put
3-4 drops of pure water on the surface of the battery.

Since the specific heat of vaporisation of water is very high, it will take
much time to vaporise and will prevent the heating up of the phone.

However, I have to continue supply of water drops every 1-2 hours.

Eureka.. Water cooling solution.

[fsug-tvm] Re: File sharing through Wi-Fi network

2010-02-20 Thread bipin kumar
Hi there

hope the following stuff will be of help. it works for me in
ubuntu 9.10 karmic. i will split this into two halves First is setup
your linux machine with samba and second is accessing files from your
friends systems
I. Setting up your system
install system-config-samba by giving command

sudo aptitude system-config-samba

once the installation is finished go to

system administration samba to open Samba Server Configuration

in the Samba Server Configuration go to

Preferences Server Setting
this will pop up a dialog box with two tabs namely Basic Security

in the basic tab

specify the workgroup (it is advisable to have all u r friends systems
including non linux ones in same workgroup, say Hostel)

and in security group change authentication mode to Share(User setting
too works) leave the rest of the settings to their defaults
once your done click OK
now go to File Add share or click on the Big + button on the
toolbar to get a dialog box to add folder u need to share
this dialog is almost self explanatory select the folder(for instance
'Library'), give a share name (preferably a shorter one, 'library' in
this case), check visible if everyone should be able to see the share
through either network neighbourhood(windows systems) or smb:///(linux
boxes), check writable if u r friends should be able to modify the
files. in the access tab u can configure access settings i.e everbody
or select users who can access(Please read the next para before u give
setup user access). once u r done click Ok and voila u r share is
ready to be accessed over the network. to be on safe side restart
samba service by executing following command in terminal

sudo /etc/init.d/samba restart

since your primary linux user account will have sudo privilages it is
not desirable use that account to access file from the client machine.
so here is what i did i created a new user account named 'shareuser'
using system administration users and groups. click the lock icon
to enable administrator privileges. click on add user enter the user
name, shareuser in thisexample and password, say 'xx' and select
profile desktop user. do not select administrator profile!!. after
this i give this user access to the share in Access tab.

II. accessing from a client machine (i am assuming your machine name
to be, say, enigma for this step)

assuming that all u guys are in same workgroup(windows and linux
included. mac guys too) u will see the your machine(something like
enigma(samba, ubuntu)) in the network neighbourhood or smb:///(or
rather Places network). in case of windows machine if it does not
show just click the link view workgroup computers this will most
probably show the available workgroups browse to your work group i.e
hostel and nd access your machine enigma annd u can see the shared
folder in it. now while opening share user name and password will be
asked give the user name, shareuser in this example and password
'xx' to access the contents

in windows machines u can also map the shares as network drives the
procedure is as follows
1. Right click on 'My Computer' icon, either on desktop or start menu,
and select 'Map Network Drive'.
2. Now select drive letter' default is Z; and last available one and
enter the share location in the format \\server name\share (for this
example \\enigma\library)
3. click the link 'connect using a different username' and enter the
username (shareuser) and password (xx) and click OK / Finish
buttons

now the share will appear as a network drive in the my computer.

Well that is it for now. hope that it will work for you as it has done
for me and all the best.

Bipin

Again i hope that this will work for you as it has done for me and all
the best

Bipin

Re: [fsug-tvm] Re: File sharing through Wi-Fi network

2010-02-20 Thread jinesh kj
hi,

There are many ways to do this. If you can afford to run a server, i
would suggest a direct connect Hub+client setup.

If not, you can use samba and setup workgroups and all. If you are the
one with content and most others are clients, may be and ftp server
will also do the trick.

But for a hostel network, with requirement for P2P sharing, i believe
a direct connect set up will be best.

 Hi there

hope the following stuff will be of help. it works for me in

I tried to follow your guidelines. COnfigured Samba and shared a folder in
my machine.
Installed samba in my friends machine, but when he navigate to smb:// he
cannot see the folder I shared.
What could be wrong?

Hi,

I dont really know the samba configuration and its details. Just check
the firewall settings you have.
If there are a large pool of users, a P2P system is better. If you are
the only provider and others are clients go with an ftp or something.
I think both will be faster than a workgroup kind of setup.

[fsug-tvm] [Urgent] Problem with OpenOffice and PDF

2010-02-20 Thread Alan
Hi,

I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 and I have to prepare a presentation for my
college seminar. For that, I used 'OpenOffice.org' that comes with
Ubuntu. Some of the slides has some links. I exported the whole
presentation to pdf and planned it to show in college PC. But, in my
PC itself, the links can't be opened in pdf file. When I click the
links(when the pdf is opened in Evince Document viewer), an error
message showing that Unable to open external link, Failed to execute
child process firefox (Permission denied) . What to do? Anyone
please help me. It's urgent.

[fsug-tvm] NO GUI or GO FOR GUI? discussion. THEGUI 0.3.1 in LINUX

2010-02-20 Thread nishandh M
SUB: TheGUI is expected to provide a GUI mode operation for normally
terminal based operations? any similiar applications? which is the most
GUI-fied distro?

Hello! I stumbled upon http://aluigi.org/mytoolz.htm(has TheGUI in it, no
documentation found yet) while searching for something else.

it states:
THEGUI is an almost universal front-end for many command-line programs
which works on both Windows and Linux because it uses the GTK+ library.
it has been successfully tested also with programs like nmap, netcat, gcc,
tidy, nasm, lame, curl, almost all my tools and many others.
it is also very easy to use and has tooltips so is enough to keep the mouse
pointer over a button to know what it does.

my problem: Suffering from severe TerminaloPhobia :) I am prone to haevy
allergic reaction to Black screens with white Fixedsys text and a blinking
Insertion point at the end. Suffers from tremor raections when verbosing is
not active in the screen. Seems to be less susceptible when TerminaloManiacs
are available in Vodafone connection. My exact problem is lack of ability in
byhearting syntax.especially long combinations of spaces and \ - / and
very short aliases like -xvf -s -apt -v[their meanings too], running to
some thousands i suppose... Being aware that i am professionaly in biology
field, most often failing to reach the targets assigned, prevents me in
motivating myself too much in understanding how linux works.

*Questions simplified:*
1)Which is the most GUI-fied, yet equally proficient distro.
atleast with an installer program, which lets me install a program in
individual steps. like extracting to a folder, installing to another(not
preferrably of my choice), select other input parameters (select/type input
parameters from screen, with visual hints provided, and not type from
memmory)

2)Is there any point in saying that GUI is not as advisable as depending on
text files with manually editable settings? I think a GUI provides a
visaully more userfriendly FrontEnd, sends input to a terminal, and displays
messages back from the terminal. what exactlymakes such GUIs not available
in GNU/Linux? (especially in program installation and uninstallation) i
tried versions like synaptic, succeded in 'making visible' a working
shortcut to VLC player on my desktop 'as in magic' without any hint of what
was happening, or any possible customisations, as it can be done in Windows
(or better) ReactOS. and i have not yet succesfully installed Cinelerra
video editor.

3) if TheGUI is going to solve my problem, kindly post if any bugs / good
links to bug resolving, known to you, that i can prevent myself from
reinventing bugs.

4) If there is no choice avilable, can somebody consider the following as
his MSc project;it would be very helpful.
A program which interprets error messages from terminal[atleast a set of
the most common applications], explains it and offers possible remedies that
can be manually executed and also providing relevent links in the web
Please do not recommend Googling, page relevency/ranking of Google is
atleast sometimes HORRIBLE especially for begginers. I mean a program which
can be insatlled, and works in a system even without internet connection. It
may have a terminal of its own, if grabbing from a fast terminal is not
possible. also should provide tarumatic messages like the step you commit
could force you learn Brail script if its gonna through granades at the
butiful galsses of Xwindows :) it is also permitted to (audibly only) bark
or kiss. i am ready to try graphics for it, if something of this kind is
felt as a necessity.

thanking you in advance, and sorry for posting personal stories, i was just
trying to represent the thought process of a minority class in the mailing
list - the Non-Expert users of Linux...and my motivation had been the
feddback from the common people ( fruit stall vendors to doctors), in just
the few hours spend at FSUG stall, Xplore 2010.

Hmm... search the internet and find out how to disable AppArmor. Try that.

I think both will be faster than a workgroup kind of setup.

just check whether the option 'visible' is checked for the folder you
have shared.

  Hi there

hope the following stuff will be of help. it works for me in
ubuntu 9.10 karmic. i will split this into two halves First is setup
your linux machine with samba and second is accessing files from your
  friends systems

I tried to follow your guidelines. COnfigured Samba and shared a folder in
  my machine.
Installed samba in my friends machine, but when he navigate to smb:// he
cannot see the folder I shared.
  What could be wrong?

He can navigate to Windows Network Workgroup (My machine name)
And then only the print$ folder is visible.

  Bipin

Again i hope that this will work for you as it has done for me and all
  the best
