Re: [fsug-tvm] best os

You should bitch at Intel. Guys should understand that it is not the OS but
the licensing by particular vendors that makes driver integration difficult.
I use nvidia chipset on all boxes and I never ran into problem with it.
NVIDIA is still propriety but offers excellent support for BSD.

Re: [fsug-tvm] best os

FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD and Solaris are by far the best when it comes to
kernel performance. Linux kernel is basically mad patch work. I am now
working on building a custom OS with OpenBSD kernel and Debian userland. I
got nvidia driver in FreeBSD (195,..), FreeBSD needs some work with audio
drivers. I prefer building kde/plasma with ruby instead of python.

installed at users own risk, but it is not default. Again, I have
confirmed this issue with other Fedora core contributors.

To check what version of grub is installed run

 rpm -q grub
 rpm -q grub2

OK agreed, Fedora does have Grub-legacy but the reason why me and David got
confused perhaps is that in the /boot directory both menu.lst and grub.conf
are maintained. As I had been looking for only grub.conf I assumed that
grub2 comes preloaded with Fedora. Indeed for restoring grub I had used the
procedure used for grub2, this may be because Fedora somehow maintains a
 compatibility between the two versions.

Initial lines in Fedora 13 grub.conf read:

 # grub.conf generated by anaconda
 #
 # Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this
 file

This was something peculiar as normally in Ubuntu with grub2, editing this
 file is not permitted.

 Hope this clears everything up.

Well, I get your point. All I ever said was not to bash upon any software be
it free or propriety. I run 7 OS on my machine for their merits and
utilities. In addition, I request the forum administration to cut short all
hardware promotions for Linux or Open Source OS since the vendors other than
nVidia have not supported it or developed drivers for it (please read 'for

In 2007 I bought Dell with Ubuntu install disk, they shipped it with

subscribe to the RMS' view rather than Linus Torlvalds view to call

It is fine to have a different opinion (at least some members do have

Re: [fsug-tvm] windows 7 is washing out grub --help-urgent

2010-06-17 Thread David Shar
The issue is related to GRUB 2 and propriety software supplied by Dell the
restores windows mbr by overwriting GRUB 2 at restart after setting up a
dual boot. People with similar issues should run boot info script from live
cd in order to detect errors. There are handful of options in Open Source, I
suggested super grub disk after evaluating the quality of initial post.

For comprehensive analysis and fix please down load boot info script from
sourceforge.net, store it on desktop and go to terminal and run 'sudo bash
~/Desktop/boot_info_script*.sh' (replace * with the script version).

The script will post an output in desktop folder with a name RESULTS.TXT.

After this you can install GRUB 2 from terminal, make sure you assign
correct partition for install.

In addition, one can fix windows virus with Unix Live CD and repair windows
with it.

Users should stop bashing propriety software and preserve their breathe for
a workaround.

On Thu, Jun 17, 2010 at 5:09 PM, nishandh M pro.n...@gmail.com wrote:

From the above discussions, the problem looks like:

An OS stores information about partitions state at the time of install,
(and details of edits done inside this OS), which it re-establishes whenever
 an 'un-authentic' change is observed.
(A malware too could alter partitions, so considering the positive aspects,
total disabling of this feature is not intended.

An OS is here personified by Win7/Vista :P
Then it would be better if we can *update that data* in the Windows system
*to the correct way the user intended it to be*. Also its backup copies.
(corresponding to the changes we made in partitions during linux
 installation).

This is offcourse not a platform to discuss propreitory work arounds, but I
belive some overrides would become necessary *IF* any OS aggresively
prevents user's wish to have an FOSS OS in his system. I hope somebody
 should be able to help..

If everything where open :P !!

in grub legacy dual boot or even multiple boots were not problematic,
because all you had to do was edit one configuration file. Now grub 2
has magic built-in and it tries to detect other oses and totally
messes up the configuration. There is no single configuration file,
instead you have to write grub scripts!! There is no response to bugs
filed (not only this one, many critical bugs are open on grub 2 for a
 long time).

Some rant on the net on this topic
 http://aronzak.wordpress.com/2008/09/30/stay-away-from-grub2/

Just go through the comments as well

As an add on. my personal experience, to boot into Fedora, now I have
to enter grub shell and manually enter root, linux, and initrd lines
with all options _every_single_time I want to boot into Fedora. I tell
my friends it is a high security system :( If some one want to boot
into Fedora they need to know the logical volume name (which grub
 can't tab complete).

Probably it is doable, but I find it easier to just go to grub shell
and manually enter the details (I did try to mess up with the
 configuration).

Since you are having Dell, check for any software like Dell Backup safe or
something installed in your Windows 7. My friend had the same problem and he
got it fixed after removing that software. There is a documentation
regarding it in the Ubuntu website. but I can't locate in now. :(

You guys are unnecessary wasting your guts on bashing windows, every system
serves a purpose. There are more reasons that Dell can imagine to use free
software. The promotion is a sales pitch as it saves them effort developing
drivers and I am sure it wont bring down the cost of hardware. I appeal to
forum administration to see to it that subscribers use this forum for

http://www.pendrivelinux.com/install-fedora-9-to-a-flash-drive-using-windows/

You may use unetbootin as well but you wont be able to upgrade the system.
Secondly, remove pulseaudio, it consumes a lot of resources and you may face
issues if you go with it.

Best,

Dave

But, to boot DVD image from USB, I think the only way is to:

 dd if=/path of image/ of=device name

The command executed sucessfully. But, when I booted (Kingston 4 GB) using
it, No operating system found. Not root partition found. Use the correct

 What to do?

Re: [fsug-tvm] Re: What is ubuntu restricted extra?

2010-06-07 Thread David Shar
Well you dont need to download or install restricted extras, it will not
make any good if you play games. For media players as and when you play the
file the player will prompt you to add more libraries or codecs. If you
choose to add restricted extras make sure you dont get icedtea packages.
Remove openjdk and install sun instead. The best place to understand Ubuntu
is the Forum hosted by Ryen. Go to ubuntuforum.com and do some research.

Re: [fsug-tvm] LUCID disappointed me....

2010-05-27 Thread David Shar
Hi,

Lucid is much better compared with Karmic. I understand that you have
trouble with the new gnome desktop themes but they can be customized. Please
install Compiz and see a difference. If you need some more you can open
package manager and install kde desktop.

You will get disappointed with Karmic since the Grub2 in Karmic has serious
issues. I lost my partition on Karmic and had to use systemrescue disk to
recompile the kernel. Be careful with whatever you do.

Best,

David

 One more thing...
Even though I've installed lucid several times, I could not see the
new boot screen completely. it was never shown fully. Sometimes the
grub boot loader failed to install also.

Re: [fsug-tvm] how to know what kind of data is coming from internet??

2010-05-27 Thread David Shar
Install firewall and deny incoming traffic. If you wish to go little
further, get zenmap (gui for nmap) and scan your ports. I am not sure on
your level of expertise and interpretation of data post zenmap. If you wish
to go beyond this and whack the dog, install snort. IMHO firewall should be
sufficient for you. Ubuntu doesnt come with operating SSH or anything like
that and since you are asking this question I guess you have not activated
it either.

If you have installed additional software, that will be lost, of course.
In that case, an upgrade should be better. I think one way to preserve
the configuration of the system is to backup /etc. I am not sure, but it
should be possible to retain the customisation by backing up the .files

Try unetbootin, you can find tutorial/instructions on their site. At

run it for DSL or Damn Small Linux, a 50 MB Knoppix based OS. There are
 many

On doing some searching some suggested MBR needs to be installed using

  How do I do that?

[fsug-tvm] Re: hardy to jaunty upgrade

2009-10-10 Thread David Shar
Just go to Systems-Administration-software sources-Ubuntu software and
change the mirror from a list at download from. It will take 4 hours with
512 kbps internet speed for an upgrade. This is safe and you will be able to
keep your old settings intact.

If you have a live CD, why don't you just reinstall?

That will happen only if your home directory is in the same partition as
the root. It is always advisable to have /home in a separate partition
so that the OS can be re-installed without affecting your data.
