@Jomon, Its addon developers responsibility to put a 4.* in their own install.rdf file. Otherwise you can download, unpack and edit the install.rdf file to replace the corresponding line under em:targetApplication with this one : em:maxVersion4.0.*/em:maxVersion or em:maxVersion4.2a1pre/em:maxVersion if you are really sure what are you doing. what should i do to get ports open? No no, I'm talking about incoming ports. You can check a particular port is open or not in some bit-torrent clients. Ports 0-1024 (I remember so) are reserved and some ports like 8080 are used for special purposes. ( I'm not a geek, so don't ask me why...! ). Use a random port less than 65000 and check if it is open. You need to learn something called port forwarding to do this manually. And all the geeks and hackers belong to this group are busy with mail wars. Thats why a stupid user like me tried to fix your problem. I installed Ubuntu 10.04, but the network manager volume control icons are missing in the notification area. But those applications are running without any problems. I googled found suggestions about restarting the panel, but that doesn't work for me...Any suggestions? I think your panel is missing 'indicator-applet'. You can try adding it to the panel. But, there is a bug reported already about missing/duplicate icons in 'indicator-applet' project. [fsug-tvm] Problem With GNOME panel | Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
I've distro upgraded to ubuntu 10.04. It was working fine till yesterday. Now After login, I could not see my panels. What I can do is only, open a terminal and run panel from there. This is a headache. I've tried 'apt-get install --reinstall gnome-panel' , 'dpkg-reconfigure gnome-panel' , but its not fixed yet. Can anyone help me to get gnome-panles working...? @Binny If you are referring to the default image viewer for ubuntu, eye of gnome, from version 2.30.0 has the feature to play animations of gif images. Lets face it. Nothing lasts for ever. No matter how much we enjoy that perfect meal, movie, romance or whatever it will always be relegated to the past. The same with operating systems. They have come and gone. [fsug-tvm] Regarding '.gif' files in Eye Of Gnome
I'm using eye of gnome - 2.28.1 (default image viewer in ubuntu 9.10) for viewing .gif files. But I can't see the animations in .gif files in it! [fsug-tvm] Help | PCI video capture card driver problem
I've *AVerTV super 009* with me. O.S is ubuntu 9.10. The card is detected and lspci lists it as 05:04.0 The problem is, it is not working fine. I tried using vlc capture facility. I used /dev/video0 as device file. I tried using cheese webcam facility. I tried test input in gstreamer-properties. What I get in all these apps is horizontal grey bars instead of video ! If yes, its kinda simple using a peer-to-peer RJ45 cabling. For ease of configuration, I suggest you to set up the Windows box as the server. In network configuration, create a new entry with a class-C IP and set the same IP as its own gateway. Then in Linux, create a new entry with some other class-c IP and set the IP of the Win box as gateway to the Linux machine. Hope you have smb running in the Linux machine. Try pinging the winbox and make sure the network is up. Open a file browser and type smb:/// in the address bar from the Linux box. Its better to enable sharing on drives you need to access. You can delete a panel by selecting 'delete this panel' option from the pop-up menu from right click on a panel. You may miss this option, if there is only one panel is running at the moment. The progam is called 'gnome-panel'. From terminal you can't delete a panel, but you can replace the session. try 'gnome-panel --help-all' for possible options. Hope this helps... I think your filesystem ntfs/vfat. Anyway if you have to move a file to this device, you should also have write permission to the source file. Make sure its permissions are correct. If you are still unable to write to the disk, you should recreate the file system. The best way to do this is 'gparted' - parted with gui. Hope this helps... Freedom Is The Only Law... I think reconfiguring dpkg should work for you too. The problem may be, due to low space synaptic may not confire/unpack some of the packages you tried to install. I hope you know what is an IP address and what is a domain name and how they are related. In fact all the domain names should be resolved by some server somewhere in the network, and those servers are called DNS. If you have a *public IP* and you run a web server to bring up your site, and people around know your IP address, then a *hostname.domain-name* is useless. People can type in your IP address directly from their browser and they will get your website loaded unless you don't have a public IP. For example 117.240.92.120 is the public IP of a system set-up by me a year back. But its not running any webserver. Freedom Is The Only Law... IMO your idea is nice. And I hope you can build up an online support facility which have a set features which irc doesn't have. If thats your plan, I think it should be a good project to work up on. Alternatively, you can improve the current irc systems to support features like voice/video etc. But I don't know if it is compatible on irc servers. Yes, A password based access is definitely much more secure, but I think the MAC based access would be useful where the college authorities need to ensure that only pre-registered nodes may access the network and also to ensure that the users use only certain IP's. The EC dept in my college uses something like that. There was an issue of students using IP's meant for teachers. In Amrita Vishwa Vishyapeetham ,I believe they use MAC based authentication for similar reasons. And the most important aspect of all is that in a college its far too difficult to ensure that the access passwords remain a *secret* :P In those cases, MAC authentication is the best method. But, is there any way to automate the MAC access policy management? How did they did that in your college? Definitely, its definitely not very difficult to spoof your MAC id and pose as someone else :D and as for password protection in a college i'd say that's a joke. @Yadu Thanks for the reply. If the authentication is through a shared key, its much simpler than MAC. Thats why I suggested WPA WPA2 personal. Since set of nodes in which the access allowed is not definite (since it is a college network), manual entry/removal of all those MACs could become complex. But any way its much secure than any sort of password authentication I believe. From your post what I guess is that, mounting disks via GUI fails because of unclean working of the by-booting O.S (Windows). You must shutdown Windows tidily. If you are unable to do that, you can forcefully mount the drives. Read 'man mount' : And If he needs a complete GNU/Linux machine, (since his CD drive is problematic) try using 'unetbootin' or 'usb-creator' (for debian based system) to make a bootable USB drive.
