 Hi,

If you want to send fax from Ubuntu system, you can use 'efax' and
'gtk-efax'. However, you will need a fax modem for that.

Instead, it seems that your printer/scanner can act like a normal
fax machine - independently from the connected system. It seems to
have a separate phone line jack for this purpose. But, I don't think
it can be used to send fax from the connected system.

 Hi,

@ Junise: Can you specify the source of the fax (file or scanner ?)
and the modem used (modem in system, or modem in printer/fax
 machine ?) ?

Since you were able to send fax using HP s/w, you may be interested
in this description of the Gnu/Linux HP Linux Printing and Imaging
 System (HPLIP) s/w:

The HP Linux Printing and Imaging System provides full support for
printing on most HP SFP (single function peripheral) inkjets and many
LaserJets, and for scanning, sending faxes and for photo-card access
on most HP MFP (multi-function peripheral) printers.

There is a package called hplip-gui which seems to have the
ability to control fax. Its description and screenshots suggest this.
It is not installed by default. You may want to give that a try as
 well.

@ Junise: I believe that hplip and hplip-gui are the s/w you are
looking for. Here is the page for hplip support for hp officejet 4355:

 http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/models/officejet/officejet_4300_series.html

It says that GUI support is not available (I don't know what that
means exactly). But Fax is available - with the following statement:

Fax supported means that PC initiated fax send is supported using hp-
sendfax, once an appropriate CUPS fax queue is set up. Fax support
varies on Linux distributions, based on the availability of python-
dbus version 0.80 or greater (versions before 0.80 will not work with
 HPLIP).

I really don't know about the CUPS fax queue they are talking about.
Anyway, please let us know about the progress.
