[fsug-tvm] Re: google voice and video chat plugin for linux..

2010-09-15 Thread bipin kumar
great now this discussion is fanning out in to a debate of politics.

politics aside i would like to point out that, most people use an app/
service based on its useablity/functionality and not its licensing
conditions. i ve lot of friends who use google video chat and i cant
force them to use some new IM protocols just because i'm using linux.
bottomline is this, having mainstream apps, proprietary or non
proprietary, available to linux platform will be helpful in increasing
its adoption. now when i am using linux and friends ask can i use
google talk in linux?? i can say a definite yes and maybe down the
line get them interested in trying out linux.

I think fanatic is too strong a word to use in this context. Would you
say that Gandhiji was a fanatic for freedom? Or Mandela for that matter?
I know that there are people who believe that the British rule did a lot
of good for the country, and some even say that it would have been so
much better if the British were still ruling India, because, apparently
according to them, we would have had much less problems. From that point
of view, Gandhiji, Subhash Chandra Bose and so many others become
fanatics. Moreover, let us remember that we are talking about the
software world. That certainly does not mean that we are quite happy
with everything else. Just a look at RMS's blog would show what all
things he fights. But right now, here, we are concerned about software
and we certainly cannot take on the whole world and make everything
free. Each one of us, as individuals, may have a number of concerns, but
cannot fight battles in all fronts simultaneously.

Yes, of course. Free Software is more about politics than about
software.

politics aside i would like to point out that, most people use an app/

Unfortunately, yes. The whole idea of the Free Software movement is to
make people realise that they need to worry about the licence. If it was
just the usability that people are worried about, then they can simply
use Microsoft Windows or Mac. At least, the latter is eminently usable.
Then why worry about freedom and things like that? Let us also remember
that many people keep away during any freedom movement. In fact, we know
that many people joined the other side and gained from it.

conditions. i ve lot of friends who use google video chat and i cant

Of course, no one is forcing anyone to use anything. We are just saying
that freedom is more important than convenience. Those who understand
that join us. Those who value convenience more do not.

bottomline is this, having mainstream apps, proprietary or non
proprietary, available to linux platform will be helpful in increasing
 its adoption.

The whole point of the Free Software movement is not just to get more
people to use GNU/Linux. If Microsoft and other proprietary software
companies release their software for GNU/Linux, many people may prefer
to use it if they are not concerned about what we are saying - namely,
freedom.

now when i am using linux and friends ask can i use
google talk in linux?? i can say a definite yes and maybe down the

Well, that does not make them conscious of the freedom that Free
Software gives. They use it simply because of its convenience, and could
start using something else tomorrow if they find that more convenient.

But we are not that 'most' people. We have joined here because we value
freedom much more than convenience.

I use a software by license. Even I may have some convenient and fancy
alternatives, I will use only free softwares, in my system.
Take the example of the below link. Even if twitter is convienient for me, I
use Identi.ca, because I value my freedom.

earlier i've tried installing mozilla and chat plugin under wine along
with flash. the results weren't exactly stellar(couldn't get the
webcam detected) and then decided it wasn't worth the effort.

video chat in empathy works fine as long as your webcam is detected by
your distro. however if u are behind institutional networks that block
IM clients(i happens to be one such unlucky guys) empathy/pidgin wont
be any help to you. the only possible solution is the web based video
chat services like the gmail. and i am happy that i now have an option
of using it in linux as well. :-)
