If you want to play songs(without video), then you should try
RhythmBox or XMMS.
try these.
1.re-install again
2.try updation to latest version
3.try use SMPLAYER as the fronend.
4. try to use various video codec(x11,xv, etc)
personally i hate Ubuntu..so go for PClinux or mandriva:-)
