I don't know if gparted has a 'merge' feature. Otherwise, you may have 
to use an LVM. I've never used it, so can't comment more.

I think his intention is not for using LVM but to use the extra 6GB
Create a new partition using fdisk
format that partition
mount it to a directory
add the mount directory in /etc/fstab

He wants to *add* the extra space to an existing partition.

yup, my intention is to increase the size of the / partition.

I found few writeups, a bit scary. Any way I will try them out.

problem is fre space is just after /dev/sda6 and linux partition is on
/dev/sda8

Hi guys ,
I am finally successfully resized my  "/" partition to use the unused 6 gb.I
booted into the live cd and used gparted to grow the partition.
eveything went smoothly and so far no problems :)
