[Ilugc] FOSS in Indian University curricula
dear friends : as you might be aware, NRCFOSS worked with Anna Univ to get two FOSS electives in the curriculum since 2006. So far, about 3000 students have taken the courses successfully in B.E. (Comp Science), B.Tech (Information Technology) and MCA. Anna Univ Coimbatore will be having FOSS as core paper in 3rd in B.E., an offshoot of this exercise was to get institutions like Jaya Engg College which -- thanks to the sustained support from LUG other FOSS enthusiasts -- have made greater impact on the growth of FOSS. FOSS electives have been approved in Shivaji University, Kolhapur Rajasthan Tech Univ. Final year B.E. CSE Networking labs in UP Tech Univ are tuned to run on FOSS platform. Punjab Tech Univ a host of others are in the process of introducing FOSS. FOSS subjects -- especially Linux, Python -- have also found their way into the non-engg currirula, especially Biotechnology. Of course, many colleges/univ have got linux as one of the papers (some time a regular one, often for a term or so depending on the efforts enthusiasm of the concerned staff member). I would appreciate if you could send me the copies of / links to FOSS subject offered in the curricula. I also welcome related suggestion / queries. As part of my official duty at NRCFOSS, the syllabus info will be updated in the NRCFOSS portal HRD page ; we have also been involvin local FOSS community as and when efforts are made to interact with the various academic entities. the info can be sent to* : srinivas...@cdac.inand/orsrini.it@ gmail.com thanks and best wishes Srinivasan * CDAC Chennai is moving into new premises inside Tidel Park. [Ilugc] GNU/Linux Workshop for Technical Staffs @ Sethu Institute of Technology
Dear all, On behalf of ILUGC, myself have conducted a two days GNU/Linux workshop @ Sethu Institute of Technology for Technical Staffs of all departments and also for Office staffs. The Sethu Institute of Technology, Near Kariapatti, Virudhunagar District wants most of its existing windows PCs to be converted to GNU/Linux, Open Source Softwares (including ECE, EEE, Mech. Departments). So, the training was planned for all sys. admins / lab technicians in the college. The training focussed on 1. Fedora-12 Linux Installation (Local / Remote using kickstart) 2. Local Repository Setup for Package management 3. Samba for File Sharing Services 4. NFS / DHCP Setup 5. LTSP (for setting up Terminal Services in existing Labs) 6. Introduction to several application development tools (codeblocks, netbeans, eclipse, openoffice, mysql, umbrello etc) I also had an interaction with all department staffs, regarding their doubts about the existing proprietary software and their equivalent applications in Linux / Open source software and how far other colleges have been using FOSS in other departments. They are planning to have a separate Linux lab for the first year students from the next academic year. They also have planned for a one week training program for Teaching staff's by first week of May (Interested persons, may contact me offlist). I would like to thank Dr. Senthil Kumar (Principal), Mrs. M. Sheerin Banu (Dean, Profesor Head-CSE) and Mr. Nageswaran (System Admin) for the support. Regards S. [Ilugc] Re: [OT]Free weekend bootcamp on Python programming
Hi, Kenneth Gonsalves law...@... writes: this clashes with the LUG meet. Sorry, I noticed the schedule clash after announcing the bootcamp. Why do you not speak at the LUG meet Well, mostly due to my hectic weekend schedule for a long time. I will plan my schedule in the coming months to speak at LUG meets :-) I believe LUG meets are for talks, discussions and peer-to-peer knowledge gathering - NOT for intensive training/workshops/bootcamps. Any session that demands attention-span of more than 2 hours should be off the LUG meet agenda in my opinion. - 8 hours is anyway way too much to introduce python. A good programmer needs to introduction to Python. A newbie programmer would need not more than 1 hour of Python induction (and he can self learn and explore on himself). But for someone from a non-programming background, my experience states that even 8 hour session could be too less and unjustified in getting them to become fully productive and competent with Python. (FYI, I have conducted 80 hour sessions in Python to a couple of companies - but thats a different thing altogether).
