[Ilugc] Devanagari Fonts Issue - Kubuntu 10.04, Firefox 3.6.3
Hello List, I just found that on my friends system firefox renders devanagari fonts very nicely http://imagebin.org/101392 but on my system fonts look like http://imagebin.org/101393 We both are using Firefox 3.6.3 (Mozilla Firefox for ubuntu canonical 1.0) on Kubuntu 10.04. The only difference is his Kubuntu installation is Fresh (done in last month) whereas I am upgrading mine since last 3 years. Do I need to install any package? Installing / removing ttf-devanagari-fonts didn't help. -- With Regards Abhishek Amberkar ___ ILUGC Mailing List: http://www.ae.iitm.ac.in/mailman/listinfo/ilugc

[Ilugc] [Query] Is releasing source code madatory for binary released under BSD License?
Dear LUG Members, Imagine I develop a software [not dependent on any library at all] and I release binary under GNU GPL, now as I understand from the GPL, anyone in public who has the binary can legally force me to provide him/her the source code in usable form. But imagine if the binary is released under BSD license, while anyone can still reverse engineer the binary and redistribute it legally, can he/she force me to provide the source code? I might be wrong but my understanding based on http://www.opensource.org/licenses/bsd-license.php suggests that releasing only binary does not violate any condition of the license but does that mean that BSD is not a free license? [freedom to see and modify source code is not available] Note: I have already googled for this a lot and the only thing which comes up is that if you take the BSD licensed code, modify it then no one can force you to release the binary but I have not found any page which talks about whether releasing code is actually necessary at all in the first place when the licensing is BSD Regards, Ashish ___ ILUGC Mailing List: http://www.ae.iitm.ac.in/mailman/listinfo/ilugc
[Ilugc] How to bring more people to ilugc meets?
Hello friends, I am a newbie to linux user group chennai. I am following the mail list for the past 2 weeks. I am excited to know that ilugc is conducting summer workshops on open source technologies and I was willing to join the workshops But the problem was that i was not able to figure out the time of the meet. Sometimes it seems that meets are postponed or canceled. In such cases (as i am a newbie) i find it difficult to decide whether or not visit MIT. Some of my friends and colleagues are also interested to visit ilugc meets and workshops but they are also facing the same problem (They are also newbies to ilugc) My humble opinion is that meets and workshops timing and status of the meets should be easily accessible. You may consider a calendering service like google calendar or something like that. I think this may attract more people to the workshops and meets. Please excuse me if i posted this mail in wrong place. Cheers, Poomalairaj ___ ILUGC Mailing List: http://www.ae.iitm.ac.in/mailman/listinfo/ilugc

One needs to bother about picking licences appropriately only if you want to release source code or want some software to be developed/examined collaboratively. If you are releasing only binaries only and want to allow to be used free, then it can also be a proprietary licence enabling free usage of the binary. Most licences, excepting GPL, like BSD allow folks to take published source code, modify them for their use/ products and choose whether to contribute the changes back to the community or not. The core stipulation in most of these is acknowledgement of copyright. -- Mohan Sundaram ___ ILUGC Mailing List: http://www.ae.iitm.ac.in/mailman/listinfo/ilugc

Re: [Ilugc] How to bring more people to ilugc meets?
I agree. Also, in my humble opinion, LUG could really help : those who just started using Linux, and those who want to start using linux. If we can have a session of 15 minutes at every LUG meet - only for clearing the doubts, It can be the most silliest thing too. Though using Linux for the past 1 year, I still feel inadequate sometimes. I use my laptop only for regular usage - mail, office documentation, and of course games (in XP booting). I have installed quite a few times - for my collegues, friends and to some of my customers too. Some of them feel really good, but many fall back to the XP since they find it difficult sometimes to get printing, and others - like opening a MS Office Word document (using OOO Writer) but finding the format is not disturbed, then spend some time in getting back the document to the desired format, and append the document, take print. etc. Sometimes, some of the PCs do not have the CD boot from BIOS etc, or sometimes, the display resolution does not permit to see all the installation options in the screen, etc, so installing is not possible. I do not know how to install through text mode. Those who come and attend - if they come to know all these, they will start experimenting, and also will be able to feel more confident, and also feel belonging to the mighty LUG. Even if one new person comes comes to the LUG meet every month - just like sabarimala - kannisami. He will bring in one more new person the next month. this is my humble opinion. with regards, s.sivakumar ___ ILUGC Mailing List: http://www.ae.iitm.ac.in/mailman/listinfo/ilugc
