[Ilugc] Where to get the security updates and news?

2010-07-14 Thread Shrinivasan T
Friends.

Where can we get the latest news, updates on security issues, vulnerabilities,
patches, fixes for various open source applications?

We can get them in respective app's site.
Is there any center location to get them all?

Thanks.

Most important location will be the security advisories
section of your distro. Eg. www.debian.org/security

[Ilugc] Anyone tried Linux desktop virtualization with NComputing L230

2010-07-14 Thread Arun Khan
On paper the NComputing L230 looks promising, claiming compatibility
with Linux. Their "middleware" desktop virtualization software posted
on their website is for only one distribution specifically Ubuntu 8.10
(which has seen end of life).

I installed the "middleware" software on Ubuntu 10.04 (as I did not
have a 8.10 install handy) but the whole install is hosed and I have
lost my 10.04 desktop! Sure I may be able to recover the installation
but not without loosing time.
I am downloading 8.10 and will try out the middleware on that platform
later in the day.

Would like to hear about your success/failure experience with
NComputing L230 and Linux desktop virtualization (please mention
distro name/version/arch).

Thanks.

hi ravi,

i have working with ZTE 880+ on ubuntu..
may be it would be similar to the one which you are having right now.

for me the device was a dual mode usb modem..

initially it was acting as USB Storage Device and another mode
"usbserial mode" which was modem.

i have used usb_modeswitch package to resolve this issue..
later used wvdial to make a ppp connection..

check out my blog post, i hope it helps:

Dear LUG members,

I am a north Indian and a regular reader of this mailing list for
about 2 years now. And I should say that I am equally annoyed by those
tamil emails as some members of this mailing list are by the one
written in Morse code.

Even though the decision regarding Tamil is in the hand of community
[and admins], my personal opinion is to make a separate list [of
Tamil] and the monthly mailing list reminder mail can contain info
about that as well. Otherwise, I am afraid if the number of Tamil
mails grew than [annoyed] people like me have to leave, making this a
Tamil-speakers-only list, it is for the admins whether it aligns with
the vision of this LUG community or not.

Personally, I am not annoyed, but just less likely to read the mail if
an English translation of _at least_ the subject or summary is not
provided (because my mail client isn't Indic script supporting, and I
am too lazy to go read the mail in a browser). While people, I guess,
are free to post in Tamil, they can not hope to reach the complete
audience with their query or whatever they wish to share. If they are
fine with that, then I don't see an issue.

If local language mail which you can't read become an eyesore, you can
just move it aside, I guess. A separate mailing list might lead to
fragmentation, but I am unsure.

> (morse code idea was impressive :) )

Actually, that isn't fully representative. The Morse code at least has
(several) translators online which can be used by anyone who doesn't
know Morse code. In case of Tamil, it is virtually impossible for
non-Tamil readers to figure it out without help from a Tamil
person.

I am not in favour of a separate tamil mailing list, all that what i request
is to tag the tamil post with [tamil](earlier the same request has been
raised by some members, about a couple of year back!!) , so that , any one
who does not want the tamil post, has the freedom to direct the mail to
/dev/null. I do not see any problem on this.

On GNU/Emacs,

Open a file/type one containing the code

M-x htmlfontify-buffer

It even saves your theme colors.

[Ilugc] LQ calls for Quarterly LQ Zero Reply Drive

2010-07-14 Thread Shrinivasan T
LinuxQuestions.org is calling you for Quarterly LQ Zero Reply Drive.

One of the main goals of LQ is to help members get questions about
Linux answered.
One way we help facilitate this is with the "Zero Reply"
functionality, which allows you to easily find threads with no
replies.
In the spirit of helping other LQ members and based on feedback from
previous efforts,
we're making the "Zero Reply Drive" a quarterly event here at LQ. The
latest LQZRD will start at noon today (LQDT)
and run for 96 hours.

During that time, I invite everyone to click

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/lqsearch.php?do=noreplies

and attempt to answer as many questions as they can.

Note for the RHCE/Linux Admins :
Answering these questions will give you a lot of
real time experience of Linux Troubleshooting.

Wishes.

Hmm.. Problem with Gmail. :-)

Thiagarajan's indentation should have been like this:

>> ps: apologies for not tagging it as [morse code ].

now, you won't get any more hyper link to click on. the PS was
supposed to mean Post Script and it wasn't a URL.

HTH,

It did not work.

Opened a file and typed M-x htmlfontify-buffer there was a [No Match] remark
and nothing happened.

[Ilugc] [Tip] UNP: Now extract any archives without any worries

2010-07-14 Thread Tha.Suresh
UNP: Now extract any archives without any worries

Many of us may know how to extract a .Tar.gz file. But how many of us
know how to extract a .bz2, .lz, etc files. Some extra option to tar
will do the needfull, but we will need to know the options for each
type of archive.

But no worries any more. You can now use 'unp', a script that extract
any type of archive by itself.
To extract any archive just type:

$ unp archive_file
where "archive_file" can be a rar, zip, tar.gz, deb,
tar.gz2, rpm or any other archive.

The best thing is that you can use unp to extract multiple types of
archives at the same time.
example:

$ unp *.tar *.tar.gz *.tar.bz2 *.rpm *.deb *.zip *.rar

To extract all the archive files in the current directory:

$ unp *

Install unp

$ sudo apt-get install unp
