Instead of lumping 2 to 3 questions together, you should ask them
seperately so that everyone understands it the first time they read
your email query.

I'll try and answer your questions to the extent I understand the
implementation of Clouds...

As far as I know most of the clouds today are commercial, but some of
them might provide free usage till you reach your quota(Storage,
bandwidth etc) like in GAE.

There are tons of material on Eucalyptus, specifically on how to set
things up, if you Google it.

Most of the open source tools provide for consuming different cloud
services and not so much for implementing a cloud.

how
You no need to go for any institution if you have internet connection in
your home you can learn it. by googling it you can learn and master it.
can we selfstudy send me some details regarding this
For self studies,
At first choose which language you are going to choose, because LAMP stands
for Linux Apache Mysql and PHP/Python/Perl so first choose anything from
this 3 lang,
For installing LAMP, follow this link
http://www.howtoforge.com/ubuntu_lamp_for_newbies
or
execute this command,
sudo apt-get install apache2 php5 mysql-client-5.0 mysql-server-5.0
phpmyadmin libapache2-mod-php5 libapache2-mod-auth-mysql php5-mysql

next learning information,
Just goto google and type getting started in LAMP
if u choosed the php then my recommendation is goto w3schools php
all the best

IMHO, XAMPP (an integrated LAMP package) would be much easier to install. It
also provides phpMyAdmin - a web interface for maintaining databases. For a
beginner it would be much easier.
It can be downloaded freely at
http://sourceforge.net/projects/xampp/files/XAMPP%20Linux/1.7.3a/xampp-linux-1.7.3a.tar.gz/downloadand
many others.

PS: Even some hosting services provide this phpMyAdmin interface (I'm using
the feature in Dreamhost).

[Ilugc] repeating Virus on pen-drive

2010-08-10 Thread Ashish Verma
Hi,

I had attached my pen-drive to a windows system, which led to loading of a
virus that creates a exe file in every folder that you open. Now to get rid
of that, I tried deleting the virus from my fedora system, however it just
won't go, and moreover it changes the access mode of the pen-drive to read
only on every delete attempt. I had tried this before and it worked, but
this time it is something different. Maybe the issue is specific to
pen-drives, because last time I tried this on a portable hard disk with
ntfs.

I have tried overwriting the exe files using the dd command (find -name *\
.exe ./ -exec dd -if=/dev/zero or some text file of={} bs=512 count=some
count enough to override the file size \;) to get rid of whatever code is in
the virus.

After running the above command, ls -l does shows the new attributes of the
file in terms of size and modified date etc, however again when I delete the
file, the original attributes are restored.

Then I tried formatting it, however after a certain point the format fails,
because again the access mode changes to read only mode.

I then tried overwriting the whole disk with the dd -if=/dev/zero, but that
fails too after certain point for the same reason.

Now the pen-drive is in a state that even when I attach it to windows, it is
accessed in read-only mode and am unable to do anything except for read the
data from it.

I will send in more details from the logs once I get back to my system.
Until then, if anyone has any pointers, please let me know.

Regards,
Ashish

p.s the AVG anti-virus also was not able to delete that virus.

Yes,These applications are installable for high memory phones. Some of
the phones restrict the size of the jar file to install. So large jar
files will not install (if we built a offline map the memory will be
high).

I am interested in develop such application to access the map using

Is it useful for the people?

I agree, Its not the best thing to be talked about in a linux forum, but
then this is a unique and engrossing scenario which makes one think of ways
that files could stored on a filesystem, such that even overwriting a
location using 'dd' did not overwrite the actual file.

I am sure there is something special to be learnt here, because as per my
knowledge dd is supposed to be overwriting blocks directly on the location
specified, then howcome upon deleting the file after overwriting, the
original file is restored, and what's making the drive to change to readonly
mode. I am just trying to understand these points.

And moreover if I take this drive to the markets like Nehru place in delhi
and Burma bazar in Chennai, they will be able to format it in no time. Like
they did for my memory card, that was not even detectable on my system or
phone (dmesg indicated finding a new device, however was able to assign a
device file for the same, for which I had once written a mail).

IMHO, XAMPP (an integrated LAMP package) would be much easier to install.
 It
also provides phpMyAdmin - a web interface for maintaining databases. For a
beginner it would be much easier.
It can be downloaded freely at

 http://sourceforge.net/projects/xampp/files/XAMPP%20Linux/1.7.3a/xampp-linux-1.7.3a.tar.gz/downloadand
 many others.

PS: Even some hosting services provide this phpMyAdmin interface (I'm using
 the feature in Dreamhost).

[Ilugc] spamassassin hits

2010-08-10 Thread Kenneth Gonsalves
hi,

after some years of experimentation, I find a setting of 3.5 on
spamassassin along with some training eliminates 99% of spam - and very
rarely catches non spam.

[Ilugc] Re: repeating Virus on pen-drive

2010-08-10 Thread K.C. Ramakrishna
I have tried overwriting the exe files using the dd command (find -name *\
 .exe ./ -exec dd -if=/dev/zero or some text file of={} bs=512 count=some
count enough to override the file size \;) to get rid of whatever code is
 in the virus.

Now this is an interesting problem. It does not seem logical that a Win virus
can cause this. There are a couple of possibilities -
1. The virus is at a lower level than 'autorun' - extremely unlikely.
2. My guess is that the drive itself is faulty - not easy to verify.
3. Something else which I can't begin to understand.

Try googling to see how you can 'reset' flash drives. We could wave strong
magnets over previous generation of hard disks - is there something equivalent
for flash drives?

Thanks,
kc

K. C. Ramakrishna
