[Ilugc] FOSS Lab setup in Sree Sakthi Engineering College, Karamadai, Coimbatore District

2010-10-21 Thread Baskar Selvaraj
Dear all,

Today myself setup a 45 seat FOSS lab for Sree Sakthi Engineering College,
Karamadai, Coimbatore District (started in 2010 -
http://www.sreesakthi.edu.in) in the main computer centre using Fedora-13.

After the discussion with Principal Dr. V. Vel Murugan, it was decided that,
students starting from the first year onwards, start using GNU/Linux and
FOSS tools all for their computing needs.

Also, I would like to thank Mr. Balamurugan of Mettupalayam who has been
very supportive in this FOSS lab setup initiative.

For any feedback, pl. contact Principal Dr. V. Velmurugan regarding the FOSS
Lab implementation.

This tip is not limited to man. Actually !! stands for last command. So you can
use things like
!! - to just repeat last command
info !! - to get info pages of last command
echo !! - simply echo last command name
time !! - rerun the command and get time usage

I normally use fixed broadband with my laptop - but when power goes or

[Ilugc] Forward Proxies

2010-10-21 Thread Harish S
Hi all,
I'm looking for some suggestions/experiences on forward proxies...
My requirements are :
1) It should be able to pool connections
2) Ability to handle high loads of concurrent requests

I'm NOT looking for any caching capabilities on the forward proxies

I have the following options now:
a) Apache's - mod_proxy (
http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/mod/mod_proxy.html)
b) Apache - Traffic Server (http://trafficserver.apache.org/)
c) Squid - http://www.squid-cache.org/

I would love to know the pros/cons for the above or any other proxies that I
have missed that might meet my requirements

Thanks,

I have tataindicom and bsnl 3g - both work perfectly with fedora and
mandriva and opensuse. Only thing is that when there is no 3G (like in
Erode where bsnl only has 2G), I have not been able to get the 3G
datacard to shift to the hybrid mode to fall back on 2G.

2G/3G switch works smoothly for me on Ubuntu mobile broadband, it take a bit
more time to connect in 2G areas though. Have to plug / unplug few times
before it connects. I am using Huawei USB datacard.

Very fair, since ns2 was not part of Debian Lenny. You can either try
out the squeeze debs, or manually backport (rebuild) the packages for
Lenny.

I suspect you might have some other repository; it would be useful to

The following solution worked successfully in Ubuntu 9.10. I felt that you
could get some idea to install/search for similar solutions for Debian.
step1: remove all ns-allinone-2.3x directory (if you put it anywhere to install
ns2) and revert back all the path changes you made in ~/.bashrc related to ns2.
step2:  Now export the Wouter Horré's ppa repository key by typing the
following command on terminal and enter:
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys B3F3334F
step3: Now add the following ppa repository to source list
    deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/wouterh/ppa/ubuntu karmic main
    deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/wouterh/ppa/ubuntu karmic main
step4: Reload repository information when prompted by "The information about
available software is out-of-date" notification or reload it manually by
following command on terminal:
    sudo apt-get update
step5: Now type the following command on terminal to install ns from the
launchpad ppa repository:
sudo apt-get install ns nam xgraph
That's all. There is no need to set-up any path, environment variables or make
any changes in ~/.bashrc .

I just dont do anything. The device gets disconnected upon trying to connect
in 2G, So when i replug it.After 3-4 tries it connects. Try gnome network
manager / mobile broadband, should be there for fedora as well.

[Ilugc] Help - GPG safe practices

2010-10-21 Thread Yogesh Girikumar
Hi,

I use thunderbird. Installed enigmail plugin to be able to use GPG
alongside. Now the thing is my .gpg directory is owned by root and
thunderbird runs as user. So I really can't add my keys to enigmail. I know
I can change ownership of .gpg to user and use enigmail. But I'm not sure if
that's safe.

I searched online for gpg safe practices. I didn't get any result that said
anything about the consequences of not having root ownership for .gpg
directory. So I want to know.

Running thunderbird as root is not really an option unless there's a way to
import all my mail addressbook, calendar etc to the root user instance
easily.

Help me please.

So, as I suspected, you have got the ns2 from from unstable. It is not
part of Lenny, so you can't apt-get it unless you have unstable in
sources.list[.d].

Thanks.

Do you mean the ~/.gnupg directory? Why is it owned by root. It should
be owned by the user in whose home directory it is stored in.

You have to start mysql service first
login as a root user then run this
#service mysqld start
or
#/etc/init.d/mysqld start
then
#chkconfig mysqld on
then you can use mysql command.

I am assuming that a forward proxy means something that receives
requests and sends them on to another webserver or whatever to handle
them. For example on one server I look after, I have nginx listening on
port 80, with a set virtual hosts each of which forwards requests to
either a django runserver, a tornado server running django, or apache
running osm tiles server and a php site. My laptop config is pasted here
(fedora):

http://dpaste.com/261750/

btw, facebook runs nginx proxied to a batch of tornado webservers.

of course if this is not what a forward proxy does, please ignore me.
