Then you could have commented after you figured it out. The above comment of
WONDERING is unwanted, IMO.

But from my imagination I would imagine that 2 talks per meet is what
  people can take.

I guess you assumed that the total meeting time remains the same. But it's
not; rather the time for a single talk remains the same (in fact there has
been no restriction imposed on time, AFAIK). If you feel the meeting is too
long, you are free to attend only the talks that interest you.

We want each speaker to spend enough time talking and answering questions.

Of course he/she has enough time.

[Ilugc] TN Govt. LapTop

2011-10-06 Thread Kumaran R
Hi,

As we all know, the Laptops distributed by the TN govt. is going
to have only non-free software. So as a counter measure I had an idea
of making posters, banners, hand-outs and brochures, explaining the
ill-effects of using windows and the costs involved.

Can people who are good in GIMP or Inkscape design such things so
that people can distribute it when a laptop distribution ceremony is
going on?

We would need as many different types or versions of the posters/
banners hand-outs et al to do this. Expecting co-operation and help
from all LUG people. Please help to spread the message.

That is a great Idea. But try to mention as Proprietary software in common
as I am having many incidents (bad) that occurred when I simply used the
Name of the OS. Especially in the crowd with Microsoft student partners.

Hope Asking help to Free software foundation and Ubuntu-India teams will
give a better help and crowd.
A brief explanation about the laptop distribution ceremony will be good so
that we can know when and where it is gonna happen.

I have added ubuntu-in mailings list and FSFTN mailings list to get some
more audience. If I get a clear overview and a good explanation about the
release, then I can post it in my blog and some of my friends' blog too.

I would prefer iptables as this can be done in executing two lines.

Linux - have evolved (I feel) - not because of somebody forced us to

(or with more difficulty) some thing ...

The scene in the mobile platform - where Nokia was giving only symbian
(earlier), was not able to pull-off for more time. People buy Andoid
phones because they can do more with it how many are knowing about
android now (the users who are using it) Android - Linux connection.
Nokia is not able to sell even though microsoft WindowsPhone is being
packed along with Nokia - now a days - on high-end phones.

When the Student is ready The teacher appears - an old and
 perennially truthfull statement.

Instead of making this a complex issue, it would fetch excellent
fruitfull results in the long run. That is what is prompting Ubuntu
and all others giving this excellent OS free of cost, and making more
 efforts to reach people.

Our concentration should be to reach more more people, instead of
cramming something on their throat. Even if you install linux on the
laptop, it is not sure that they will use Linux instead of Microsoft
 Windows.

These students - who are getting educated in colleges / schools - are
not dumb, but are made to join the crowd, and at this point of time,
it is Microsoft Windows 7, and later 8, etc.

If they perceive that Linux is 100 % rewarding for them in the long
run they would certainly go for it.

How many of us are really helping new people to get solutions in this
forum without they getting hurt (no, I am not going to start a war),
for their problems. It is still being perceived even by computer
users who are more than 10 years of usage, feels that Linux is
difficult, and 'getting help is very difficult'. It is this perceived
thing that should be taken care off.

To make this Linux more interesting, we should organise for people to
get trained : Freely of course, Languages like C, etc, and every month
simple competitions should be organised in localities, and taking them
into State Level (Imagine IPL's Success).

Organising a competition - say for 20 people, in basics, database,
GIMP, etc should not be difficult - say after 3 months of coaching. A
person who is 12 to 18 year old feel much satisfied with a certificate
from a body like ILUGC, etc. The competition can be every 2 months, in
each place. This will make people / students / parents to encourage
people to even think about Linux.

we can always find sponsors for these sort of events - in every place.
I am trying to do something in mumbai, very shortly.

My simple 2 paise (which now has no meaning / worth)

 with warm regards

you build a rpm package and then install it through yum/rpm so that

You are confused. Nouveau is the open source driver for Nvidia cards.
Radeon is the open source driver for ATI cards.

Is your gateway the local dns resolver for your network? If not, you
can do that redirecting all dns requests going out to the gateway's
resolver itself using iptables. Then, in the etc/hosts file of the
