I just copy pasted the command from my shell window :) since the files
are under version control (Hg) I had to use 'hg mv'

do we need 'mercury' to rename a file? Isn't this just 'mv' instead of
'hg mv'?

Above command line is specific to renaming multiple files under
'mercury'.

We can rename multiple files using another method,

$ for FILE in *.css; do mv "${FILE}" "${FILE%.css}.tss"; done

I don't understand what you are stuck with here. You might want to
upgrade to Thunderbird 9.0 ( if you think there is something wrong
with version 7.0) .

If you are looking for alternatives, one mail client that you should
really try is claws mail. It's in the repos.

You can try this: Edit -> Folder Properties -> click on the 'repair
folder' button. (this might get back your mails by chance)

Good ol' advice, before you do anything, BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP your
Thunderbird folder by copying the /home//.thunderbird folder to
somewhere safe.

Apologies for jumping in late into this thread.

There is a command "alternatives" which can be used to set and switch
between various java (or for that matter any application) of different
 versions.

I had to fight with this command to set the system for developers who
develop apps across versions of Java, PHP, Python -- Common scenario
for those who develop apps in Centos 4.x/5.x .

HTH in future.
