He was working on such project, that I remember ; but it was part of some
other project. I don't remember which one is that. I will try to connect
with some people who worked with him in the same to get some idea.

Dear friends,

Kenneth Gonsalves had written to me in 2010 about a software he had
developed for an address database in India:

Would any of you have access to this software?

Arun just referred to you addressing the list using leetspeak 'G33k5'
in your original email. Also do not top post your mails to the list.
Interleaved, trimmed posting style is the recommended one. For more
information read the mailing list guidelines -
http://ilugc.in/mailinglist-guidelines . Just hoping you read this
properly and do not top post your reply to this.

Just adding to Arun's comments - the reason he has asked you to read
the licensing terms of the blob is that most proprietary
blobs/software make it illegal to try reverse engineering them by
mentioning that explicitly in their licensing terms.

[Ilugc] Open Source Reverse Engineering Tools

2013-02-26 Thread Sahil ModGill
Hello G33k5,

Kindly suggest me some free and open source tools for reverse engineering.

I know a bunch of tools like:
- nm returns all symbols used by the app
- strings returns all strings inside the binary
- lsof -p monitors files, sockets and files used by the application
- dtrace
- strace
- ltrace all do more or less the same. monitor the calls of the
app
- gdb -atacched to process-

Remember, in *some colleges* they remove the setup immediately after
the workshop or at the end of the semester.

Today an engineering college requested for a FOSS workshop saying that
they don't need any hand's on for their students. I simply refused
saying I won't do it without hands-on (as they may have thought I
would be additionally charging for that. I have never charged for the
lab setup for any of the workshops I have done so far). After the
assurance that the lab setup will be done FREE of COST, now, they have
agreed to conduct with hands-on sessions.

It's up to the institutions to continue using it, or remove it. We
want all participants to practice hands-on in all the workshops we
conduct.

Better solution would be to use XFCE + latest distribution. If they are not
going to get updates or not able to install some development package then
it defeats the main purpose of using Linux. Also 1GB is good enough even
for gnome-shell (so xfce is not a problem). Mate can also be used in latest
OS if they want gnome-2 interface.

Hope this helps,
