Members who were present today for the session here is the link to Kibana
instance which has our archive data.

Link: http://128.199.138.108:90
username: kibanauser
password: ilugc!@#4

(Tip to get started: After login click on last 15 minutes on top right
corner and change it to last 1 year)

For others to give some context - we were trying to get meaningful
information from our mailing list archives
http://www.ae.iitm.ac.in/pipermail/ilugc/. I came up with a solution to
parse these archives messages, push it to Elasticsearch and use Kibana for
analytics. I'll get back with github link once I finish required code
cleaning.

Looking forward to feedbacks and suggestions for improvement, quick hack so
bound to be not 100%.

Can we host this on our ILUGC domain? Just a Cron, Elasticsearch, Kibana,
Nginx makes up the stack.

Also I notice http://ilugc.in is suspended now, please contact the
billing/support department as soon as possible is the message on site.

[Ilugc] MySQL leap second works ?

2015-08-13 Thread Bala Kumar
Hi everyone,
During the Monthly Meet - Aug 8-2015 - I raised an open question
regarding leap
seconds and how are they handled in DB's. Everyone had our opinions and
most of the
attendees suggested it is taken care by the OS.

Interestingly looks like Leap second is handled by DB as well because of
the usage of
*now()* function. Found this link interesting
https://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.5/en/time-zone-leap-seconds.html.

In recent versions of MySQL leap second 59:60 is reverted to 59:59 and
because of this
decrement there can be ambiguities in our where queries. For accurate query
results MySQL
suggests using *UNIX_TIMESTAMP(timestamp_column).*

Eg:
  = mysql SELECT a, ts, UNIX_TIMESTAMP(ts) FROM t1;
  +--+-++
  | a | ts | UNIX_TIMESTAMP(ts) |
  +--+-++ |
  | 1 | 2008-12-31 23:59:59 |1230767999 |
  | 2 | 2008-12-31 23:59:59 |1230768000 |
  +--+-++
2 rows in set (0.00 sec)

Querying for the leap second -
  = SELECT * FROM t1 WHERE ts = '2008-12-31 23:59:60';*
Empty set, 2 warnings (0.00 sec)
Returns empty set, because it is stored as 23:59:59 as shown in first
query.

Using UNIX_TIMESTAMP in the condition we get -
  = mysql *SELECT * FROM t1 WHERE UNIX_TIMESTAMP(ts) = 1230768000;
+--+-+
| a| ts |
+--+-+
|2 | 2008-12-31 23:59:59 |
+--+-+
1 row in set (0.00 sec)

Interesting part is that for 59:59 we get only one result and not the
expected two rows.
  = mysql *SELECT * FROM t1 WHERE ts = '2008-12-31 23:59:59';*
+--+-+
| a| ts |
+--+-+
|1 | 2008-12-31 23:59:59 |
+--+-+
1 row in set (0.00 sec)

I Took this Leap Second example from MySQL doc and when I tried it on my
machine, this leap
second behaviour was not working - very recently someone have commented the
same in the doc.
Please let me know if the example actually works for anyone else ?

Also http://www.postgresql.org/docs/9.1/static/functions-datetime.html says
PostgreSQL uses UT1 because leap seconds are not handled. Interested to
know if there
are any such MySQL like decrements for leap seconds in PostgreSQL too.

Thanks,
Bala.

[Ilugc] Headphones not working in ubuntu Natty .

2011-05-16 Thread Bala Kumar
Hi,
I use Intel dg33fb desktop board and the default audio codec installed
is :* Realtek alc888* . I also followed the instructions given here
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto and made changes to
the */etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf* file and added the line *options
snd-hda-intel model=3stack-6ch-intel . *I also verified 3stack-6ch-intel
is the model name for dg33* boards here :
http://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/sound/alsa/HD-Audio-Models.txt but
still the headphones don't work.

When I open alsamixer in terminal , the headphone column alone is
disabled( greyed) .

Any idea on the fix ?

Bala Kumar.

[Ilugc] Reduce volume on System sounds ??

2011-04-28 Thread Bala Kumar
Hi,
How to reduce the volume for system sounds like the default play of a
song when a mouse cursor is over a mp3 file, ubuntu startup sound etc ?
Tried reducing the sound level with the slider in system-- prefences--
sound but on doing it that way the sound level for the music players like
RhythmBox and movieplayer goes down ! So is there a way to reduce the System
sounds alone ?

  I am using ubuntu 10.10

[Ilugc] Headphones not working in ubuntu

2010-10-15 Thread Bala Kumar
I had this problem of my headphones not working in *ubuntu 10.04* and now in
*10.10* too. My motherboard is a Intel DG33FB and I have already checked
many forums and have followed all ideas that they gave in vain (many of
these forums came up with snd_hda_intel to be added in /proc/asound/version)
. And this seems to be a unique problem with the particular board alone, 3
of my friends using the same board also have similar problems. I Was waiting
a long time so that they fix the bug in ubuntu 10.10 atleast but not yet and
I have finally moved to fedora where it works :)
