[Ilugc] [Project Idea] Desktop background changer with Free software philosophy
Guys, I got this idea when puduvailug came up with idea for naming machines with Free Software activists, Privacy enthusiasts Scientists Link: http://puduvaiglug.wordpress.com/2014/10/11/edubuntu-in-girls-government-high-school/ I have seen desktop background changer app in *Ubuntu* ( automatically ). It has feature Picture of the day. That will fetch some random image from wikipedia. App name is *Wallch* ( code: https://code.launchpad.net/~wallch/wallpaper-changer/trunk ). It is available in software center. Idea is to add plugin to that. Step1: There must be service (auto or manually) which will create photo of free activist with description about him. It will be an web service. Like below. Instead of quotes we will have description about him. http://www.rugusavay.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/Richard-Stallman-Quotes-5.jpg Step2: We need to create plugin in Wallch, which will pick random image from our web service ( like it doing for Wikipedia ). We may need to join Wallch mailing list for their help. So whenever I started my system. we will daily show one activist in his desktop. It might help us to understand free software philosophy. This can be done easily by installing wallch. You don't need to collect those photos and have it in system. You need to just select that option One day One Hero Linux users or (Open source or free software enthusiast) may enjoy this. Suggestions are welcome. Or if this is already implemented, please share the link. If not, Can anyone do this as a open source project? Re: [Ilugc] How to create cover images for all the ebooks in ProjectMadurai.org ?

We will be using http://pressbooks.com to convert them as ebub. There are around 500 ebooks. We are looking for volunteers to convert them all as epub and mobi. In the meantime, They all need cover images. On my request, sathia tried a rails app. https://github.com/sathia27/project_madurai But, it got unicode issue. I solved this unicode issue in another way. Same as wkhtmltopdf method. This method internally creates html file with title, author and other attributes and then it will take screenshot with help of phantomjs. Check http://phantomjs.org/. you can look source code in https://github.com/sathia27/project_madurai So it is release as gem. You can just install this library and run to generate images ( check project page for installation ). I tried using python to add a tamil text over a image. The Tamil Text is displayed as splitted. Sample Image: http://postimg.org/image/8z7ed377r/ http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.org.user-groups.linux.ilugc/84982 I too got the same issue what sathia gets. Then, How to solve this? This seems a great unicode issue and there is no programmable solution. Here comes the power utilities of GNU/Linux. when programming cant help much, shell can help. There is a utility called wkhtmltopdf which can convert html as PDF. Shall we create html pages with all the book name and author name details? Then, we can convert as PDF. Then, PDF to image. Will it work? We use wkhtmltoimage to convert the html files into images. Example : wkhtmltoimage --height 640 --width 429 001.html 001.jpg Using this method, we can convert all the html files to images directly. -- -- Regards sathia Here I share my experiments with open source. http://www.sathia27.wordpress.com ___ ILUGC Mailing List: http://www.ae.iitm.ac.in/mailman/listinfo/ilugc ILUGC Mailing List Guidelines: http://ilugc.in/mailinglist-guidelines
[Ilugc] Regarding RMagick unicode font issue
Guys, I have written library ( Ruby gem ) for project_madurai ( http://projectmadurai.org/pmworks.html ). Aim of this gem is to get list of title and author from that html page, and create cover image with these values. It was working fine. But i am facing some issue while working with this. Actual font is not problem, but when i render in image via Rmagick or Imagemagick, it looks bad ( check sample image in below link: word ஆத்திசூடி ) Let me know if anybody got/solved this issue. It would be better if you had also included the learning path as well as the amount of effort (time variant and a small project) Node.js is like programming language. There are lot of frameworks build on node.js. *Express js*. Start with express js. It is minimal and flexible node.js framework. It is like Sinatra (Ruby), Flash(Python), Slim (PHP) Link: http://expressjs.com/ *Geddy js* Then try geddy js. It is structured mvc framework. Like Rails, Django, CakePHP Link: http://geddyjs.org/ Both website have good documentation. Easy to install and start with. Re: [Ilugc] [ilugc] How to print unicode charecter in terminal
One way to debug this is to try to redirect the output to a .txt or .html file and check the output in gedit or firefox browser that understands the encoding. Ok I will check this. #1 Please put a header, copyright, license info if you are releasing code to the public. #2 You might want to give a detailed example on how to use your program in the README with examples. I am not sure if you expect English/Tamil text as input at various prompts. #3 Add your contact e-mail address in the README #4 Your exception cases need to be clearly specific. If you test for Internet connectivity, then clearly say so. #5 You have imported re, codecs, textwrap and not used it in the code #6 It is good practice to check function return values before proceeding to use them in your code #7 Please add docstring when you write Python code #8 Avoid magic numbers and strings, please. Move all your prompt strings to separate variables, so tomorrow if you have to change them you only have to do it once #9 Fix your indentation #10 Run pylint on your code and fix the warnings Thank you for your suggestion. ok i will change all these corrections and will update the code. -- Regards sathia http://www.sathia27.wordpress.com ___ ILUGC Mailing List: http://www.ae.iitm.ac.in/mailman/listinfo/ilugc
