[Ilugc] [Help] Teach me Rails deployment on production

2015-09-01 Thread Sathish Manohar
Hi Guys/Girls,

I want to learn all (enough) about deploying a rails app in production. I'm
a rails developer myself.

Following are the specifics I want to know.

* How to deploy to cloud specifically digital ocean
* Difference between nginx and apache web servers
* About application servers, passenger, unicorn and differences
* Load balancing setup
* File Storage Setup (AWS)
* Database setup with master slave replication
* Centralized log management
* Auto building the environment using chef
* Managing these systems for best performance and uptime

I know parts of all these above concepts I've mentioned, but don't know how
they work as a cohesive unit. I'm a fast learner and I would like this to
be a face to face session. We shall meet someplace like coffee day. I'll
buy you coffee and pay you by the hour. I don't want you to teach me for
free. I know every one of these is huge if we dive deep, I don't want to
dive deep, I want to have a right overall picture to start with.

Please send your name, availability, coffee day convenient for you and
hourly rate.

Thanks

[Ilugc] Suggest a workflow for few developers working on same codebase managed by Git

2013-04-19 Thread sathish manohar
Hi Guys/Gals,

I'm working on a Ruby on Rails project which is hosted as a Git
project under Bitbucket. The other developer who is working on the
project has forked the repository and sends pull requests from his
master branch to my master branch, when I comment on necessary
corrections, he creates new commits. Now when I go ahead and merge the
pull-request, the history has bugfix commits which are not necessary.

Please suggest a workflow that suits 2 to 3 people group, who are in
close communication, keep a clean topic branch and still get the work
done.

[Ilugc] Does Open Source really matter for end user adoption and satisfaction?

2013-04-17 Thread sathish manohar
Hi Guys/Gals,

I've been thinking about this topic for a while, I've been a follower
of open-source for years now, I advocate for open systems where ever
possible, that said, I have an opinion that I want to put out there
and get your thoughts and inputs on the same.

Software is a set of instructions given to a computer to perform
certain task or a set of functions. Weather the source code is
open-source or free software or proprietary doesn't matter to the
machine, since it is a machine it will perform any task given to it in
a right manner.

Recently open source methodology has exploded with many great projects
and hundreds of thousands of contributers across the world. It is
great for open-source ecosystem. Many developers/businesses has grown
to expect open source software for any business critical
infrastructure to avoid vendor lock-in. Open-source has been proven as
the best way to develop software.

My concern is, while open source is a great way to develop software. A
software being open-source doesn't add much incentive to end-user to
adopt or switch to the software. End user expectations are entirely
different. Any software vendor that takes this into account, comes up
with much better software. For Example, Internet Explorer had greatest
market share when Firefox entered the scene, But, Firefox gained a
significant market share because Mozilla was able to deliver a browser
with much superior quality and end user experience.

I believe when we deliver software with superior quality, beauty and
ease of use, it gives user incentives to try out/switch softwares and
we may not have to evangelize our softwares.

[Ilugc] Looking for Used Computer - part of students training on FOSS

2012-03-15 Thread Sathish M Kumar
Dear Ilugies,

I have planned to start the Computer training center as a* **Social
Service* for
school students and
others who would like to learn computer and of-course training will be
strictly focused on FOSS,
in a motive to develop *my** own rural village* *Salapalayam*, in Namakkal
Dist.

I talked with few student in my village, they are very interest to learn
computer more practically.
since they are not much exposed to computer in their schools, teachers only
concentrating only on their theoretical subject not on practical
understanding of computer. I would like to focus not only on computer but
also on various field of interest, initially, on computer.

Most of students are not affordable to own computer or getting training
available in any of commercial centers in
Namakkal town which is 6-8 Km far from village.
Students convenient time: After school hours and they can utilize the
summer holidays being in the village.
*Purely, as Service motive. It is not for business or something else you
may guess.*

You can also do this for your village if it is feasible. Develop every
village from root level in India,
I am damn sure we people can make *India 2020. As Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam*
 Quoted.

*Please NOTE below:*
So, i was looking to buy Used / Old computers about 10 numbers from my
friends circle, But i don't get good response from my friends circle.

And one of my friend suggested me that, Buy working condition Scraped
computer from some of IT companies who doing it regular basis at a cheap
rate/free.
I have not much idea of How to get scrapped computers? Who is doing it? Whom
to contact?

If anyone knows kindly do a favor, it will be helpful.

Reasonable configuration, P-4, 512RAM, Minimum 40GB HD.
My budget around 2-3 K for each PC(10 Numbers)

Basically web application developer in LAMP technology.

I would like to know about setting-up mirror server and database server in

we have one server at one Geo-location and we need to set-up another server
at another Geo-location on different network.
Same application will be running in both server, and separate Database
server running on each on various host ip.
All database operations will be done at both server. So that i need to
set-up both databases always in synchronize with each other.

It would be grateful if anyone give idea or suggestion on doing the same.
