Hi,

The problem got solved when I selected the Chipset for the drive correctly -
which is Marvell pata. The following insightful article helped me understand
the problem I had.

The device is not detected during bootup. Following is the error that gets
thrown up when i give 'eject' command

   eject: tried to use `/dev/scd0' as device name but it is no block device
   eject: tried to use `/mnt/cdrom' as device name but it is no block device
   eject: unable to find or open device for: `cdrom'

I would suggest Zimbra for moving away from MS Exchange. I recently
tried, Zimbra and OpenXchange as an alternate for MS Exchange. Both
are good and with full of features matching with MS Exchange all the
way. But I preferred Zimbra for it outstanding web interface.

It is particularly the checkox of font antializing. When I enable it,
all the fonts are gone, when I disable it, text is fine.

[Ilugc] Openoffice Problem

2009-04-05 Thread Sivaram Kannan
Hi all,

For last couple of months I have been using Openoffice 3 beta in a
debian lenny box. Last week when I opened the app, I could not see any
font on the application. Though the windows and buttons are all
visible, the fonts are not visible. The application itself looks like
a hanged windows application. I tried reinstalling the latest version,
installed the debian's repository version, but everything gave the
same result. What can I do to get my office suite work again properly?
Working on Google docs is a real pain, please help.

I forget to mention, if I play any video files(from VLC, or from the
browser) my system is getting rebooted. This is the link I used to
install my Fedora system for playing the video files.

http://techchorus.net/how-play-music-and-video-fedora-10

If I play any video in vlc or in my broswer(youtube), my system is
getting rebooted. If I did not play anything, system is working good.
Can I check any log or anywhere to find out what is the problem?
/var/log/messages does not seem to give any information for this
problem.

Thanks,
Siva.

[Ilugc] Problem playing video in Fedora 10 and Debian Lenny

Hi all,

I installed Flash plugin in my systems Fedora 10 and Debian Lenny.
Whenever I try to play a video in my browser(Firefox), my system seems
to be rebooting without any indication. I am not sure how to find any
information after the reboot. Since I installed couple of plugins -
gstreamer, flash, mplayer plugins am not sure which one is creating
problem. Any one else has seen similar problem in Fedora or Debian?

Thanks,

[Ilugc] Openoffice in Singapore Airlines

2009-01-06 Thread Sivaram Kannan
Hi all,

I was flying in a Singapore Airlines last week and I was browsing
through their impressive inflight entertainment system. One thing that
interested me was an option to use that as a PC. When I went there, I
saw a office suite in place, when I clicked it, to my surprise it is
Openoffice(well, it is staroffice, powered by openoffice). The
interface was pretty cool, though the system was a bit slow. I just
played around to see what the underlying system was, but I did not see
it. But I think it should be a unix clone may be solaris or linux,
since the window theme had a xfce kind of look.

This is the first time that I am seeing a company using opensource
tools in a system that is going to be used by public.

Thanks,
Siva.

[Ilugc] Python - Apache2 doubt

2008-10-07 Thread Sivaram Kannan
Hi all,

I have a doubt in accessing python through Apache. I have the
following configuration in my apache2/site-default/default file.

Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews
AllowOverride None
Order allow,deny
allow from all
AddHandler mod_python .py
PythonHandler first
PythonDebug on

My /var/www/first.py file looks like this.

def handler(req):
req.content_type = "text/plain"
req.write("Hello World!")
return apache.OK

def get_time():

html = """

get_time function

get_time function

The local time of this server is: %s
The timezone of this server is : %s

""" % (time.ctime(time.time()), time.timezone/3600)

When I give the following url "http://localhost/first.py"; the function
handler is getting executed. But when I give the url
"http://localhost/first.py/get_time"; the function get_time is not
getting called. What should I do to call anyfunction in a python
script through mod_python?

I am using Debian Lenny for this.

siva.

Go to skype.com and download the skype for ubuntu 7.04, which will be
a .deb packaged. Give the following command,

sudo dpkg -i <.deb package name>

This will install the skype for you. For launching app, type alt+f2
and give skype in it.

May I know how to install by booting a custom kernel?? Is it mounting
the iso, including the custom kernel in the image and booting ? or
some other way?

[Ilugc] Debian Lenny Installation Problem

2008-07-18 Thread Sivaram Kannan
Hi all,

Am facing a installation problem in Debian Lenny Beta 2. I downloaded
the dvd version and when I tried to install it in my pc, the cdrom
drive(LG DVD writer) is not getting detected. The installation is
failing in the step, "Detect and Mount CD-ROM."

I googled and found that I could pass kernel parameters libata=1 or
libata.atapi_enabled=1 to over come the issue. But even after giving
the parameters I got the same errors. I guess the problem would not be
uncommon, can some one give a solution for this

thanks,
siva.
