[Ilugc] Fwd: [ILUG-BOM] Interview of Linus Torvalds; He Also Speaks Of Sad Situation Of India
India is kind of somewhat a sad situation. Compared to the amount of educated people, I think India is fairly low on the list compared to what it could be. Culturally it should be fairly easy, because language barriers should not be there. If you are educated in India, you know English even if it is not your first language. So India actually should have an easier time being involved in some of the discussions. Don't get me wrong, there are developers, but just not as many as I would expect. And I don't know quite why. There is a fair amount of really enthusiastic local LUGs and I get to hear about them. But, at the same time I don't know India, you know much better. My gut feeling is that a lot of the actual professional developers in India see software development as a job and not as a hobby. That's the kind of picture I've gotten, I don't know if it's true. If you see it [software development] as a job and not as a hobby the whole open source thing is not as natural anymore. http://www.muktware.com/news/2855 ___ ILUGC Mailing List: http://www.ae.iitm.ac.in/mailman/listinfo/ilugc

As most of the responses so far are with RHEL, let me try put plus of SUSE here. - As mentioned before both uses RPM internally. SUSE comes with yast and zypper. I have felt that zypper has more and better commandline options than yum. For things I had to modify the yum.conf, zypper had some commandline options. - SUSE always tries stays with the latest packages. However RHEL does not. one can argue latest means it may not still be robust enough yet. In my cases I always wanted my apache to be latest with all security updates. If I try the same in RHEL, i have ended up with wired problems. - The GUI package manager is much better than RHEL. ___ ILUGC Mailing List: http://www.ae.iitm.ac.in/mailman/listinfo/ilugc

Just thought of asking if you have a solution for a similar problem I face. I use a extended monitor at my workplace(monitor as the only display screen). When I suspend the laptop and power it on without the monitor it gives a blank screen. I have to type the password blind folded and everything will appear in the latop screen. To avoid this I make sure laptop screen is the only screen used before suspending it. Has anyone faced this problem ? Is there a better solution for this ? ___ ILUGC Mailing List: http://www.ae.iitm.ac.in/mailman/listinfo/ilugc

Re: [Ilugc] How to find apache downtime?
did you try nagios ? I have not tried it personally but have heard its not straight forward to configure it. I have heard its quite stable. Check this nagios report from apache, http://monitoring.apache.org/status/ This link might help. http://sixrevisions.com/tools/10-free-server-network-monitoring-tools-that-kick-ass/ Also check hyperic, which is not mentioned in the above link.
