One advantage for Web apps in Ubuntu OS over that in other mobile platforms

Rather you write markups and styles, (think of HTML and CSS) and then you
export it to PDF or other formats to view it.

What are the advantages of using LaTex or what difference does it make?

With LaTeX, you can do much complex things, like complex mathematical

Really? In Unity, at least you can open many instances but switching
between the windows is little tricky. When the currently focused window is
of program A and you want to switch to one of the many windows of program
B, clicking the B's icon in the left panel (or using Alt+Tab to traverse to
program B) will open the last accessed window of the program. Clicking the
icon again will show a tiled view of all the windows of the program and you
can click on the one you want. Using Alt+Tab to access the window that was
not used last is more painful. You need to traverse to the app using
Alt+Tab and press down arrow still holding the Alt key (or keep holding Alt
key for few seconds) to get the tiled view of the open windows.

May be Gnome 3 also has some similar ways, explore :)

And I am used to having
icons for all my open programs neatly lined up along the bottom of my
screen, and clicking the one I want. Now I have to keep banging on the
top right of my screen with the mouse to do that ...

I'm used to Alt+Tab even before Unity and Gnome3 came and I find it much
easier. I was thinking that most of the programmers or anyone who uses
keyboard more use Alt+Tab rather than clicking.

Nice.

I am yet to find a better theme, so stopping at pagelines.

With any theme, the header image height can be reduced very much, as in
current era of widescreen laptops vertical space is to be used
intelligently. In my screen, the logo and the menu bar together occupy
almost half of the page height.

Showing the three boxes below the menu only in home page should be enough,
IMO. If you feel those things need to be visible always, it's better to put
them in sidebar.

Feel free to share your suggestions to keep the site content rich.

For the content to be better visible for search engines, use appropriate
tags. For example, as far as I could see, most of the sub-headings in the
posts are simply bold text, rather than h2. In wordpress, you can use
Ctrl+2 to make the selected text as h2, Ctrl+3 for h3, etc.

to be frank, we do not need such people on this list. This attitude is
typical of the casual, sloppy, unprofessional attitude towards work that
many people have. If you do something, take pride in doing it to the

Formulating a reply on a mailing list - or contributing code to a

+1.

People who complain so should look at things from the reader's perspective.
They should think of how frustrating it would be for them to read an
ill-formatted documentation. Mailing list is no different from that -
discussions are meant to be referenced by a wider community, even more than
the subscribers of the mailing list.

I find answers to many of doubts by search results from mailing lists. When
the search results you get have unformatted, top-posted replies, many of us
would feel like Who asked this guy to reply? He should have better kept

a community, either make it as best as possible or don't do it at all.

I think this is fairly simple thing and plain javascript should be enough.
CSS3 should be enough for the fading transitions.

And, HTML5 is a very broad term that includes a lot of new features and I
don't know which part you are talking about. The term is often loosely used
and even CSS3 is said to come under the umbrella term. Did you mean HTML5

Can you justify? Oh wait. You're right, if you use emacs, probably you know
GNU/Linux, not Linux ;)

Okay how to do simple things that are really cool with vi?

You are contradicting with your previous statement I am going to talk only
about advanced use.

You can flip the character case using the ~ (tilde) operator.

Just move over the characters pressing it.

Is there no better way? In emacs you could change case of a selected region
by C-x C-u for uppercase and C-x C-l for lowercase. To change case of just
the following word, you can simply do M-u for uppercase, M-l for lowercase
and M-c for camelcase.

I'm not trying to prove emacs is superior, as I don't know much about vi.
I'm just trying to understand vi.

You can format the file and indent the loops and conditions by
selecting the region and pressing =

 This only works in vim.

Now you are dragging me into emacs-vi battle. You can do this same way in
emacs by selecting region and pressing C-M-\ . Again I'm not saying emacs
is superior (though it may be), but asking you to stop making such
arbitrary statements.

A web programming language , particularly web 2.0 like Ajax or jQuery
 or JSON/XML requires a
thorough knowledge of the context; ie, web components.

Those except XML are not languages. Ajax is just a technique to load
content asynchronously using js. jQuery is a javascript library. JSON is a
data format originated from javascript.

Those are the browser, web server, DOM(Document Object Model) which is
 the XML/HTML view of
the web page and of course javascript and CSS.

DOM is not HTML view. As the name suggests, it's how the document (the web
page) is represented as set of objects in your browser. In fact, that was
the very first reason why firebug was developed - though one could simply '
view source code' of a page, which is the HTML view, there was no good way
to visualize DOM.

And JSON helps you obtain nested data structures(array of arrays)

s/array/object
In javascript, an array is an object but the converse is not true.

Btw, JSON has replaced XML in the web in the recent years, thanks to its
much simpler yet much more powerful representation.

(upgradable to 8GB), 320 GB Western Digital SATA 2.5 HDD, 14.1

On the whole the laptop doesn't feel cheap. Its light in weight
thanks to the absence of a DVD drive and Wifi. The keyboard is not
upto Lenovo standards, but it is still much better than most laptop
keyboards. I'm typing this email in this keyboard, and it offers good
feedback.. The display is a 14 1366x768. It has good brightness but
poor viewing angles and lots of glare, thanks to the glossy finish.
The lack of wifi is a huge disappointment. The battery lasted just
under 3 hours (2:58) while doing light web-browsing and playing music
(max. brightness and max. volume). Overall, the design is good with a
good textured feel. It feels solid to hold, and doesn't have lots of
 flex.

It has a dual boot with Windows 7 Professional and BOSS
 GNU/Linux. I haven't tested Windows 7 much. It has a Office 2010
Starter Edition and Microsoft Security Essentials (I doubt if that is
an anti-virus.) It has few educational apps too. Most of the hard-disk
space (~200 GB) is allocated for it. It logs in by default as a root
 user.

The BOSS Linux 4.0, has GNOME 2.30 and OpenOffice.org 3.2. It has
few educational apps like Thirukural and Tamil Keyboard. It also has
the TN govt. textbooks for classes 11 and 12 in .pdf format. I had to
update 8 packages after connecting to the internet. They have just
shifted the top panel to the bottom to make it more windows-like.
Overall, BOSS works fine and fast.. It has iceweasel and icedove for
 web-browsing and mail.

That was a nice review. Thanks Kumaran.

I think RMS is full of mischief. He never cared for Corporates, but only
for small users and the society. So I feel he purposely used the word
Free to make it attractive to the layman. In India and anywhere, people
will travel by car spending Rs. 100/- on petrol to save Rs.50/- on some
purchase if there is a Free offer.

I think I have some solid evidence for my claim that RMS is mischievous:

Consider the word GNU - initially it was pronounced as New, so as to
 make it more appealing.

In the actual word gnu which means an African antelope, 'g' is silent and
so its pronunciation is similar to 'new'. To make the word GNU (that refers
to the OS), it is pronounced like Gah-nu. You can notice RMS stressing
the Gah part in his pronunciation of GNU.

And consider the word Hurd which he used for his 'free' kernel project.
It is very easy to confuse Hurd with Herd; in order to encourage the Herd
 mentality of the computing masses.

So although RMS claims Free stands for Freedom, it is only the second or
third meaning in the dictionary. The attempt is not to clarify, but to
purposely and mischievously mislead to misinterpret.

Ok, let it be. You have a better term to replace free? If you have one,
we can at least ask him why he didn't choose that.

Btw, puns and figures of speech are common in UNIX commands also. It can be
seen from the commands more and less, fsck, etc.

Yes, if you are not talking about *software* freedom.

No one is banning the usage of proprietary software here. Rather, the
companies that make proprietary software play cheap tricks to ensure that
computers are not usable without those proprietary software. And the
intention of the free software movement is to protect users from such a
lock, by developing free software equivalents.

To give an
example, NVIDIA provides its proprietary drivers for Linux and I use it
because it works best for my hardware. So, the first thing I do after
installation is nuke nouveau. This does not mean I have forgotten the
 point of free software.

IMHO, If someone wants to use a proprietary product with FOSS, so be it,
denying this right to him/her would indeed be against the FOSS philosophy.

There is no single thing called FOSS philosophy, there is *Free software
philosophy* and *Open source philosophy* which are very different, though
the technical definitions sound almost the same. If you really want to
understand the difference, read this quite long story [1].

Also, voice from outside the country may encourage the Americans to look

You can set up a pre-receive hook in git, on the remote (server-side hook).
Assuming that your remote is 'origin', you can do
$ git remote show origin
to get the url of the remote.

Then move to the path in the remote. There will be a 'hooks' directory with
sample hook scripts. You can either rename the pre-receive.sample file or

been no restriction imposed on time, AFAIK). If you feel the meeting is too
long, you are free to attend only the talks that interest you.

We want each speaker to spend enough time talking and answering questions.

Of course he/she has enough time.

Hi,

I have no idea about Ruby gems, but I hope this may help.

 Hi friends,

I have been developing a Terminal based Chat application using Ruby version

can well authenticate and able to chat using google (gmail) account. But
When i try to connect to Facebook using the domain (
usern...@chat.facebook.com), it logs in without any problem but i am not
able to chat with anyone or it doesn't shows my status as online.

From my understanding, Facebook as well as Gmail works like this:
1. The xmpp request from their own web UI is given the highest precedence
and it will override all others.
2. If you have set offline in the web UI and logged in from other client,
you will be online only in that client. Web UI will still show you as
offline.

Regarding not able to chat with others, Facebook uses the uid (an integer
id) as the primary identifier. So it has to be u...@chat.facebook.com, i
guess.

Yes ofcourse, facebook uses the User id(uid) as the primary identifier as
well as an username it uses.. for example my username is 'prashere' and i
will always use my Email to log in into facebook, in order to use facebook
chat from other clients like PIDGIN, EMPATHY..etc we can be able to login
using Username itself, that is working in PIDGIN via xmpp but not in my
 ruby
 application, thats what am wondering

Oh, I guess my reply was ambiguous. You can use the username or email id to
login but the chat client should use the uid for getting any data (chat, for
example) from facebook. In empathy, you can see that the previous
conversations dialog shows the users by uid, not username or name. It's a
bug with empathy but at least it helps understanding it ;)

So you have to check if the ruby gem uses uid for sending and fetching chat
messages.

HTH :)

phpinfo(INFO_MODULES);

It gives information of all the modules. You have to extract the Apache
information from it. I'm not sure if there is a way to get info for a
specific module alone.

I agree with some of your points, but I would differ from the above point.
AFAIK, in recent (at least for past 1 year) versions of Ubuntu, connecting
projector and dual display is very simple and intuitive. You don't have to
mess around with any code, you don't event have to use command line; it's
just a matter of 2 or 3 clicks!

Are you talking about AJAX?

It is not specific to OS. Except IE, in all other browsers you can use
XMLHttpRequest [1] to load contents asynchronously.

I think the OP meant to ask some thing else. In any case, my teams
used aynchronous XMLHTTPRequest calls in IE first in 1999. It has been
a while and so I may be naming it wrong, but this feature first
appeared in IE as far as I can remember. It came to other browsers
atleast a year or two later.

Oh you are right. The concept was originally from Microsoft, but the
Javascript wrapper object named XMLHttpRequest was created by Mozilla which
has become the standard. Just this wrapper object was not supported in older
versions of IE, where you have to use the ActiveXObject.

command

$ sudo /opt/lampp/lampp status
