In recent versions of Firefox, hitting backspace key has no effect.
You can use Alt+Left_Arrow to go to previous page and Alt+Right_Arrow to go
forward. Does this work in 3.0 too?

I'm using Firefox 3.6.3 and I don't see this problem. This might be a
problem in earlier versions which has been fixed later. Why don't you
consider upgrading your FF?

This is not a version issue. Firefox shortcut for previous page is Backspace
in windows and Ctrl+[ in GNU/Linux. Alt + Left_Arrow works in both OSs.

Hmmm.:-) Any idea why different shortcuts for windows and GNU/Linux
releases? Compatibility with IE?

The only relevant Google results point to changing the
 browser.sessionhistory.max_total_viewers setting but the Mozilla
Knowledge Base says that this should automatically be 8 pages for me so
 that doesn't make much sense
 http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser.sessionhistory.max_total_viewers (I
 have 3 GB of RAM)

I can't simply test this because I only have reasonably fast connections
at my disposal and this is only noticeable when something goes wrong
(like the site accessed is slow or something).

 Any other ideas?
