If you want to share files, then install guest additions and enable file
sharing in vbox. If you want to perform networking functions between the
host and guest, you can use the "Internal Networking" or "Host Only
Networking" options. These allow multiple VMs on the same host to
communicate with each other too.

If you have a single VM, then you could as well use the "NAT" option, where
by default "10.0.2.15" is assigned as IP of guest via DHCP and "10.0.2.2" is
the internal virtual interface's IP of host.

If an encrypted connection is what you want, then you can create a VPN
server and client design (using OpenVPN maybe) in one of the options
mentioned above. It's the same process as creating a VPN server and client
design between two machines in a normal scenario right, or am I missing
something here?

Has any one tried to configure as VPN the guest and host under VBox to
share files/network function between them?

Interesting - looks like VB now allows any user to fire up a VM.
IIRC, in earlier versions (about 18-24 months ago) the user had to be
a member of 'vboxusers' group otherwise the VM would not fire up.

Well I am sorry I misread the documentation on Vbox as devices will be
available on both the host and guest I am wrong I read the documentation again
and it very clear once host receives the device the host will loose it.
would have loved to have it at both places though as I will not be able
to share the host and guest on virtual network as I have only one usb
wifi available.Am digging to find an alternate to use network function
if any one has some exposure please shre the info.

I was able to get the usb working following your link. Now I am not sure
what is the cause but the moment I tried to configure wifi uder the
guest VBox the host got disconnected from the internet and took almost 1
hour to reconnect. Any clue? it is a issue to worry or just a
coincidence. Also under guest my wifi access point was not available
fully it was just partially shown the point.

Is there any limitation of such nature where the host is deprived of the
device if guest wants it ?

What's the problem with networking? I haven't tried windows but with
Linux, i have internet working out of the box. Make sure NAT is
selected in your network configuration in VirtualBox, which is default
anyways.
With guest addons installed, USB should also work.

[Ilugc] Iligc-configuring XP in Vitual box VM

2010-10-26 Thread Yoganandam Goteti
Hello

I successfully installed Vitual box and XP under it. Now how do I
configure other components like USB/Network cards display cards etc I
nam using ubuntu 10.04 I on various intervals during need to access
internet via VM to use my proprietary online trading s/w tool they have
not yet released any LINUX version yet.so that I need not restart to
switch between the dual OS.

I have a pen drive plugged in my ubuntu and able to access it but it is
not being detected under Vitual box.

Any clues/pointers welcome. On Parallel doing a search on the web also.
