Today OP's need is CIFS file sharing, in future it may include other
file sharing formats.

FreeNAS is an appliance based on FreeBSD (www.freenas.org). It does
*samba* plus a whole lot more in an image size that is smaller than an
Ubuntu server install. Plus it comes with a Web UI management.

You might find the answers.

You can also use something like a DNS343 (dlink). Storage and AD work out
of box. You can set up linux to run on it for more control.

What you need is not freenas, but samba.

Make sure your hardware is in it's HCL. Autumn of 2009, I wanted to a
migrate a file server to FreeNAS and found that it did not have good
support for the Chelsio 10G NIC in the server.

Pluggable IDE/SATA DOMs are available from vendors who specialize in
server grade systems. I am sure Chennai has a vibrant server vendor
channel.

IMO, USB sticks are OK for end user consumer type solutions [1], they
are slow and failure rate is high. For a file server I would not
recommend USB stick.

[1] I use USB sticks for my Atom based desktop clients.

While getting a board with DOM may be an issue, I think using a low
capacity USB stick on a USB boot supported system would be a good
alternative.

FreeNAS is based on FreeBSD. openfiler is a Linux based alternative.
Both appliances have a Web UI for managing the disk volumes. open-e
is a commercial product but there is a free "as in beer" version as
well.

IMO, you can't go wrong with any of them.

Consider installing the appliance on a DoM (Disk on Module); this will
allow you to keep all your hard drives for storage capacity.

I have no idea about FreeNAS but I am familiar with a setup which uses
Samba coupled to MS AD and NetApp volumes. I assume that FreeNAS is a
free alternative to NetApp.

[Ilugc] Linux based file server

2012-09-11 Thread JITHIN K
Hi All,

I have a Windows XP PC used for sharing files, documents etc over my
network. Since the number of network users increased the sharing wont
possible. I mean more than 10 sessions not possible ( XP supports maximum
10 sessions). So I am planning to move to a linux based file server or a
linux based NAS (FreeNAS). My requirements are

   - A common location to share data / add data / delete data.

   - AD (Active directory) based authentication. All windows clients can
   access the share.

   - Backup option

So I would like to go head with FreeNAS. Also I would like to hear your
suggestion.

JK
