Does it use grub or grub2? If grub, then just edit the line beginning
with 'kernel' to end with 'single' (i.e. add the boot option 'single').
See if it boots into single user. If it does, try 'startx' as root (I
sort of remember something bad occasionally happening if you do this -
like .ICEAuthority getting owned by root but give it a shot anyway).
That should get you started on figuring it out.
