Use some hex-editor to check whether the files have anything
relevant in them.

If you want only text out the file, try strings to extract text, it may work

strings corruptedfile > somefile.txt

For pdf you may try pdf to text conversion.

I haven`t try with live linux distro. But, i tried with my ubuntu laptop.
But, when i tries to open those doc files, it goes for "ASCII Filter
Options". I selected "Character Set: Unicode" , "Default font: Liberation
Serif" & "Language: English". But, it shows nothing but a couple of signs
there!

All the time, windows is throwing the error, right? What is the exact error?

boot livecd and try to open with OpenOffice? what it says? If OpenOffice
works, then your files are safe. Just backup those files, to other drive.
