[Ilugc] Some of my views

I am new to this group. I am working in a engineering college from 2000
onwards as a admin. I tried to implement linux from 2005 onwards. But at the
time lot of difficulties i faced from the staff side.

Now the things are changed. Students are most aware about open source.

I heard about NRC-FOSS which is funded by central government. They have to
support colleges. But I dont know now they are working r not?

As per the AICTE norms engineering colleges may use open source software.
But the AICTE committee people not aware about open source.

It is their(NRC-FOSS) duty to educate the committee people about open source

If approached NRC-FOSS There is no proper answer. I went NRC-FOSS directly
and i was really shocked to see a big LCD display which is working on
windows.

+1 , All we as outsiders need to remember that the more we cry/shout
on Govt/univ organisations/bodies the more we would be alienating them
.

The best we could do is to see if we could help them come closer to
the community . Try personally emailing them twice before we bring the
issue to a mailing list .

Good that you have taken initiative to go to that place , well '
windows ' a propreitary OS is not IMHO a huge 'Hall of Shame' kind of
thing ,but did you see how many free softwares that windows had
installed?

Some people still use the propreitary windows because of their comfort
levels in using a distro /environment . But I think with proper
guidance and our(community) efforts in explaining the importance and
values of free software , things might change .

Lets hope to hear more from them and collaborate more from them .

Well Syllabus change and good support by NRCFOSS AUKBC to the events
in and around tamilnadu with a strong ILUGC backing did rock chennai
in terms of FOSS :)

Well NRCFOSS AUKBC has planted a seed called 'FOSSCONF' , would love
to see the tree and the fruits :)

Let all of us pour some water and give it some sunshine !

Consider it in the light of the fact that his so called FOSS Lab
Server was "borrowed/stolen" from the FOSS lab server developed by

before making false statements like this, please verify your facts. The
two are very different.

Even if they had been same, using words like "borrowed" or
"stolen" don't make sense here(free software world). After all, he has
been setting up FOSS labs.

they are working

not true - this year in Coimbatore AICTE gave recognition to one college
which had pure foss in it's lab

which we have done

how did you approach?

LCD displays do not work on windows - it must have been connected to a
computer running windows. And what is your problem with this? NRC-FOSS
is housed in the AU-KBC centre which also does a lot of work in
proprietary software - so it is quite natural that they use windows.

I hope they are not expecting NRC-FOSS to setup labs for them for free.

basker is there - on a shoe string budget he is doing more than NRC-FOSS
has been able to do with all the central government crores! (and do not
take this as a criticism of NRC-FOSS - govt/univ bodies are constrained,
motivated individuals can do much more. All we can do is give initial

It's Suguna Spark Business School, Kallipalayam, Coimbatore (Now, I am here
in the college to complete the full foss lab setup)

Also, 3 months back I was here during AICTE inspection and AICTE committee
people are aware about open source and also accepted, and they did not
insist on any proprietary software/os. (Kenneth helped through NRC-FOSS by
providing a letter to the college regarding this FOSS implementation)
