Generally it is not a good idea to install packages from an earlier version. What is it in 8.10 that you want real bad and is not available in 8.04? Why not install 8.04 (from the DVD you have) when you have confessed that you do neet the bleeding edge packages of 8.10? Since 8.04 is LTS (long term support) most likely newer version of packages may available for 8.04. -- Arun Khan ___ To unsubscribe, email [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe " in the subject or body of the message. http://www.ae.iitm.ac.in/mailman/listinfo/ilugc

Or will it conflict? I assume GNU/Linux will have backward compatibility but I just want confirmation from experts in this forum. It's a pretty bad idea to do that as things might have changed a lot between 2 releases, especially the dependent libraries and sometimes kernel changes as well. It might work without problems rarely, or with some problem here and there though the software remains mostly usable, but nothing is guaranteed to work and more importantly, if anything breaks due to this you can't even rant about it anywhere or file a bug. On another note, "Backward compatibility" means that the files or data you created or used with an earlier version continues to be valid and usable with the current or improved version. For example, it means your site is still viewable with the browser, you documents can still be opened and edited with the same office application, etc. It doesn't mean your bizare combination of newer software will work with the older libraries or vise versa. -- --- With Regards, Parthan "technofreak" 2FF01026 http://blog.technofreak.in ___ To unsubscribe, email [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe " in the subject or body of the message. http://www.ae.iitm.ac.in/mailman/listinfo/ilugc
