[Ilugc] Why NOT a discussion forum site for ILUGC?
Hi, It just clicked me spontaneously. Why not we have a separate discussion forum site for ILUGC, and push all technical and lengthy discussions there? Whenever a new topic is created in the forum, the members can post it here for announcement, and then any further discussion can be made in the forum. I dont want to prescribe any particular software, but obviously SMF and phpbb are the popular PHP based ones. (We can consider forums written in other languages too, like ruby or python). We can include open id feature too for easy login. If we need any new improvements on this discussion forum, we can categorize it as "New Project" to be given to eligible engineering students as mini-project and guide them to complete. But, asking all the existing 2000 users to register in another forum is too difficult. There are many forums available like linuxquestions.org, ubuntuforums.org etc We dont need a separate forum for ilugc. We can use any of the forums. If you have any issues in the mailing list, we can discuss them and fix them for sure. Thanks a lot for thinking and providing suggestions for the improvements of ilugc. All suggestions are welcome and we can implement the better suggestions. The discussion forum site i proposed is not for replacing ILUGC.. rather, i proposed it as a complementary one.. The only issue i have here is flooding of inbox.. thanx to gmail mail thread grouping, i could manage it.. I am running another yahoo group where some times hot debate will happen b/w few set of users, which will flood all other members who may not be interested.. I took a small survey and found that whenever there are large mails coming, it is because of intense debate b/w few members.. So i thought of starting a discussion forum for the yahoo group, and shifted such discussions there.. Members will initiate a thread in the forum, and announce the same in the group.. And periodical updates of discussion happening on the particular topic would be mailed to the group. This solved the mail flooding problem, while at the same time, keep all the members updated of the main discussion.. I thought the same can be replicated here.. With advent of openid, the members need not be required to remember the password.. I am in the process of integrating openid (yahoo & gmail) in my forum site..
