[Ilugc] World's fastest super computer runs on Linux

2012-11-15 Thread Prof. Partha
World's fastest super computer runs on Linux. Like most top-ranked
supercomputers, Titan uses a Linux operating system. It runs the Cray
Linux Environment, which is based on SUSE 11.

It definitely is a win that gnu/linux is the base operating system.
However, IMHO, in systems of this type, the integration tools on top of
the base operating system weigh more. Most of the performance gains come
from how those tools are built. Not sure how many of such tools are Free
Software.

With gnu/linux in the bottom and a whole stack of proprietary stuff on
top is not exactly a win for the community, IMHO.
