Well, along the way you will get to know a lot of things like SICP. but you have to decide what to master and what to merely have an exposure. There is no generalized best way to do it. Also you can start playing around CMS. Start with joomla then move on to drupal, moodle etc. Subscribe to web technology based blog and tutorial websites RSS feeds. sivaji j.g wrote: Start with joomla then move on to drupal, moodle etc. Uh-huh. From my perspective, that's a very bad place to start. Sure they're popular, but I've seen programmers permanently scarred by the 'php mindset'. They can't grok good app design if it hits them on their head. Perhaps SICP is overkill, but it's not such a bad place to start. Sohail, I would recommend you aim higher - go learn Ruby or Python. Start with self-respecting web-frameworks like Rails or Django. They won't be as easy to get started with as PHP, but it will be worth your effort. Oh yes, if you want to get anywhere in modern web development at all, take Mano's advice and don't forget to master Javascript :). [Ilugc] to learn web development.
I am new to the open source concepts but find it fascinating. I had installed ubuntu8.10 and from then my system never hanged even once. I want to know the structure and process of a website project. I had knowledge of html and i have now learnt php from a book(for dummies series). Can people tell me how to proceed? what more to learn and which other books to read? i have installed php5 and apache2 on my ubuntu8.10system. Or give me some assignments in php? or is there some thing else that is crucial to web development that is required. Also to contribute to the open source movement i want to begin with doing documentation for any project or review it as i am quick at pointing out typos. Can someone give me a project to document or review its documentation?. But please do remember i am a newbie not a techie. Add more friends to your messenger and enjoy! Then, take a language such as Python (which has good library support and an active community) and understand the language and then probably you can move to webframeworks in that language (like Django). I might have missed many details in the above , but SICP is pretty good to start off. The entire flow above will take some time(from a minimum of a year to a few). Once, the prerequisites are satisfied see the projects in the community that need volunteers and write some _quality_ code and start enjoying. -V- http://twitter.com/venkat83 ___ To unsubscribe, email ilugc-requ...@ae.iitm.ac.in with unsubscribe password address in the subject or body of the message. http://www.ae.iitm.ac.in/mailman/listinfo/ilugc
