No idea about that.

and that too only for audio cds, not mp3.
Red Hat shipped without support for mpeg audio due to concerns about patents.

You only need to install this rpm to be able to play mp3's in Red Hat 8 / 9:
xmms-mpg123-1.2.7-21.i386.rpm You ca find a copy of it here

Raj No idea about that.

Could be an output plugin thingie. Select the appropriate output
plugin for your windowing system.

If you're playing directly to /dev/dsp, maybe you could chgrp audio
/dev/dsp and then add yourself to the audio group (usermod).

I'd use kscd or an equivalent application for playing CDs. They do
proper CDDB lookups; I don't know if xmms is CDDB-aware.

pcqlinux is not an original RH distro, and the acutal
RH cd doesnt recognize it as such...

So, i'd recommend you to backup the data and then
re-install on the existing partition..

At that point I stopped the process. I wanted to

 destroyed in the
 process?

Re: [ilugd] upgrading from PCQ 8 to RH 9

2003-09-14 Thread linuxlingam
in my humble experience, the only *workable* upgrade to a redhat from a
previous version to another is as follows:

1) backup your data
2) erase the existing installation
3) freshly install the new version.
4) plug your data files back.

anything else will take you so much time to resolve, that by the time you
do, it is time for the next version's update.

the above is true if you wish to do a major version upgrade, say from RH8
to RH9, or even from RH7.2 to RH7.3

small upgrades of a couple of files, utilities, etc, via rpm installations,
is quite okay, provided you do your dep checks and don't do dirty installs
of software.

[ilugd] which linux distro+release?

2003-09-14 Thread linuxlingam
so you see this machine, with a shell prompt inviting you to punch away.

question:

you know its linux. but which distribution of linux? (knoppix, redhat,
debian, slackware, mandrake...?)

more importantly, which release of that particular linux distribution
(Redhat 8, PCQLinuxX.x, Knoppix 3.2, Debian Woody 3.0.0r, etc?)

so what's the magic bash command or sequence of commands?
have done my googling for this and thumbed through some handy reference
books. no luck.

Re: [ilugd] which linux distro+release?

2003-09-14 Thread Sharninder Singh
is the uname command of any use here ? Try looking under /etc/ for some file
named release or something ... U might also be able to peruse some info from
some of the readymade scripts that come with the distro ... looking at the
comments and all ... RPM and DEB based distros and Slackware are easily
identifiable looking at the directory structure and general *feel* of the
system. Should'nt be too difficult, though that depends on the amount of
personal customisation that the system has gone through !!
