in redhat 6.2 times i had an avance logic ISA sound card. i was not able
to configure it with the default drivers. i don't remember the commands
though (it was sndconfig afair), but i used creative soundblaster

Each device driver in the system is programmed to handle devices of a
particular type number. You can take a look at the device drivers and
their allocated device types by executing the command cat /proc/devices.

For every device type, there can be a number of devices on the system.
The minor number helps the device driver differentiate between the
different devices of its type on the system.

For example, my /proc/devices shows:

 Block devices:
  1 ramdisk
  2 fd
  3 ide0
  7 loop
 [...]
This shows that my IDE disk driver has the major number 3.
The following devices are handled by this driver.
$ ls -l /dev/| grep  3, | grep ^b | sort -n -k 6 | head
brw-rw1 root disk 3, 0 Jan 30 2003 hda
brw-rw1 root disk 3, 1 Jan 30 2003 hda1
brw-rw1 root disk 3, 2 Jan 30 2003 hda2
brw-rw1 root disk 3, 3 Jan 30 2003 hda3
brw-rw1 root disk 3, 4 Jan 30 2003 hda4
brw-rw1 root disk 3, 5 Jan 30 2003 hda5
brw-rw1 root disk 3, 6 Jan 30 2003 hda6
brw-rw1 root disk 3, 7 Jan 30 2003 hda7
brw-rw1 root disk 3, 8 Jan 30 2003 hda8
brw-rw1 root disk 3, 9 Jan 30 2003 hda9
Whenver you try to read or write from any of these devices, the kernel
calls the appropriate device driver according to the major number (3 for
ide0), and the device driver knows from the minor number which
device/partition you want to read/write from.

[ilugd] Delhi Monthly Programmers meet

2004-03-02 Thread Sandip Bhattacharya
Hi!

The JUG-Delhi meet on this Sunday at Sarai came up with an interesting
conclusion. We generally agreed that having a general programmers meet
rather than a language oriented meet is more likely to appeal to many
people.

The general idea is to have a programmers meet every fourth Sunday of
the month. The venue tentatively is at Sarai right now, but could be
anywhere more centrally located if somebody could come out with a good
projector/presentation system.

The aim of these meets are going to be general programming talks,
concentrating on programming concepts. Since many of these concepts need
to be demonstrated with implementations, the choice of the
implementation language is left to the presentor. You can use C,
C++/Pascal, Java, Perl, Python, even visual basic/C# (shudder) for that
matter. The meet is language agnostic, just as the
linux-india-programmers list tries to be. The focus is not on teaching
languages, but on getting across concepts.

By the third Sunday of each month, we would like to have the list of
presentors and topics to be finalized, with hopefully the presentation
available online so that people can come prepared with questions.

Suggestions invited for the meet.

At present, the following people have volunteered with tentative topics
for the next meet. They are going to be finalized by the third sunday(21st).

1. Vivek Khurana - OO GUI Designing. Language/Toolkit=???

2. Rahul Kumar - Non-Blocking Input/Output. Language=Java/NIO

3. Sandip Bhattacharya - (still to be decided)

He recently tried a modified kernel (by HP) that gives him 240 m/sec
(on the same machine- intel P4), Those guys dont know what has caused
the drastic improvement, and its not a production worthy version, so we
cant use it.

Does anyone know about performance issues on the 2.4.25 kernel?

Where is the bottleneck - disk i/o, or cpu? Some vmstat / iostat

And if that is an email application, how are you injecting the email?

Keep into account stuff like nagel / tcp slowstart penalties

DIGIRISK SPECIALIST Mi2g is likely to get right up the noses of open source
advocates everywhere by claiming that Linux servers are the most breached
online servers available.
The London based outfit said that Linux is the worst, Windows servers had got
better and BSDs and Mac OSX were the safest.

Mi2g claimed it had analysed 17,074 successful digital attacks against online
servers and networks in January 2004, with Linux accounting for 13,654
breaches, and Windows for 2005 followed by BSD and Mac OS X with 555 breaches

But, the company is quick to point out that its figures don't take into
account the numerous malware attacks against Windows and mass website
defacements were counted as multiple attacks.

BTW where is the scope of work etc for ILUGD(organization) defined on the
linux-delhi.org website?
I couldn't locate it.
Just added it as 'Societification' under 'Contact Us'.

[ilugd] How do I record LPs using a Linux Box?

2004-03-02 Thread Ashwin Baindur
Dear all,

I´ve got a stackful of LPs. Irreplacable to me. I want to record them, myself.
I´ve got a Comp with Red Hat 8.0, a borrowed laptop with Mandrake 9.2 and a
Record Plater (currently in disrepair).

Can anyone tell me what hardware and software I need?
Yes, I am googling and I am starting to go through the chaff.

If anyone know how, would really appreciate his help in putting it up. Free
beer promised during sessions.

Thanx in advance,
AshLin

See if the web pages of Niels Provos at umich.edu are still around. He
did a lot of steganography work, and wrote quite a bit about it.

Hi List!

If i to opt among the following for network installation of linux
Redhat (say9.0)
Which one would you consider best?
Options are NFS, HTTP or FTP ?
run a tftp server . you don't need TCP reliabilty.

Ankit.
