 (1) Apache Web Server
First read /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf on your RH box. This file will give
you some good info on what needs to be done. Then read the apache manual. If
you are still stuck, use google, and if you continue to be stuck, feel free
to drop a mail on this list! One thing to be careful with apache is that
file permissions pay a big role, and a lot of problems can be traced to
owner/group and permissions.

 (2) Send Mail Server
There is a whole book on sendmail by O' Reily. If you need to learn
sendmail, then this is the book. OTOH consider implementing qmail, postfix
or exim. All of these are in general easier to configure than sendmail, more
secure and faster.

 (5) Domain Name Server
There are tons of HOWTOs on configuring bind. Start with a few of them,
learn about the basic DNS protocol and the way things are organized. Also
get to know the file formats and conventions for bind. Bind is easy once u
know the basics, but pay specific attention to the config files!

BTW.. do read the howto on each subject first. They are really good, and
better than most people can explain general configuration. I find that with
Linux servers, reading the howtos gets you going. For advanced issues, ask
specific questions, and you will get good answers.

I think it is safer to try using sudo. You will have to give the web
server uid the right to use sudo for this program. Just be very careful
about screening inputs to your script.

This one was hilarious. :))

I have started developing a sense of humour about vulnerabilities (until
one day someone breaks into my servers, and turns humour into tragedy).

Package: wu-ftpd
Vulnerability : several
Problem-Type : remote
Debian-specific: no
CVE Ids: CAN-2004-0148 CAN-2004-0185

Two vulnerabilities were discovered in wu-ftpd:

CAN-2004-0148 - Glenn Stewart discovered that users could bypass the
directory access restrictions imposed by the restricted-gid option by
changing the permissions on their home directory. On a subsequent
login, when access to the user's home directory was denied, wu-ftpd
would fall back to the root directory.

CAN-2004-0185 - A buffer overflow existed in wu-ftpd's code which
 deals with S/key authentication.

For the stable distribution (woody) these problems have been fixed in
version 2.6.2-3woody4.

For the unstable distribution (sid) these problems have been fixed in
version 2.6.2-17.1.

We recommend that you update your wu-ftpd package.

Upgrade Instructions
-

wget url
will fetch the file for you
dpkg -i file.deb
will install the referenced file.

If you are using the apt-get package manager, use the line for
sources.list as given below:

apt-get update
will update the internal database
apt-get upgrade
will install corrected packages

You may use an automated update by adding the resources from the
footer to the proper configuration.

Hello!

I received a mail from Amkette which was about Repetitive Strain
Injuries(RSI) and how their keyboards can help prevent that (and bring
universal peace and harmony). It wanted to send back a return receipt
too, which I promptly canceled.

The suspicious thing was that is addressed me as Dear Linux
professional. The only place I had given out that particular email ID
was at LinuxAsia. Are they selling those email IDs? Has any one you got
such mails too?

Moral of the story : Use a mailinator.com email ID the next time when
registering for any such event.

LL, please come out with your article on privacy and spam soon.
