Suggestions:
1. Install Linux (any flavor) on your personal workstation at home/hostel.
2. Buy/Download some good books on Linux (Beg-Inter level). Read and practice, strike
a balance.
3. E-subscribe to good mailing lists.
4. You save $$$

Now, going to institutes w'd mean --- Commuting (in a place like Delhi) can be
painful/time consuming, Distractions (you are basically looking for pretty girls, I
know that, unfortunately you won't find many pretty faces in this industry [I meant
Open Source]), and Trainers are not good in *majority* of the cases.

You loose $$$ and should be ready to take up Dummy course on DOS

So, what's your next move eh?

This is not a PostgreSQL issue. You only want data from another machine.
You could take backup on CDs or a Flash disk and restore on the target.
Or get it tar+[g|b]zipped via HTTP/S, or S/FTP or NFS of even SSH. Over
long distance, SSH is recommended as it's fast and secure.

Let's say you want contents of dir /var/lib/pgsql downloaded. Do as follows:
ssh [EMAIL PROTECTED] tar cj /var/lib/pgsql dump.tar.bz2

RE: [ilugd] Postgres..Urgent Help Required!!

2004-10-06 Thread Freemail
Hi amitflu,
the postgres datadir is usally stored in the $PGDATA environment variable.
Try to printenv this variable or simply cd to this. If it doesn't exist then
try to find postgresql.conf (or the pg_hba.conf) in your local filesystem.
It also must be in the DATADIR.
The default install dir is /usr/local/pgsql/data, but one can install it
anywhere.

I hope you will find it.

Good luck!
Bye,

Re: Re: [ilugd] Postgres..Urgent Help Required!!

2004-10-06 Thread Nishant Kavi
What this bloke wants is a File system level backup. So, the following is suggested:

tar -cf backup.tar /usr/local/pgsql/data

There are two restrictions, however, which make this method impractical, or at least
inferior to the pg_dump method:

1. The database server must be shut down in order to get a usable backup. Half-way
measures such as disallowing all connections will not work as there is always some
buffering going on. For this reason it is also not advisable to trust file systems
that claim to support consistent snapshots.

Needless to say that you also need to shut down the server before restoring the data.

2. If you have dug into the details of the file system layout you may be tempted to
try to back up or restore only certain individual tables or databases from their
respective files or directories. This will not work because the information contained
in these files contains only half the truth. The other half is in the commit log files
pg_clog/*, which contain the commit status of all transactions. A table file is only
usable with this information. Of course it is also impossible to restore only a table
and the associated pg_clog data because that will render all other tables in the
database cluster useless.

3. Time to hit the door!

BR,
N

--
Also note that the file system backup will not necessarily be smaller than an SQL
dump. On the contrary, it will most likely be larger. (pg_dump does not need to dump
the contents of indexes for example, just the commands to recreate them.)

2004-10-06 Thread Raj Shekhar
Linuxrock wrote:

Ok i downloaded jabber for windows and Linux now what how to setup the

First you have to install the jabber server. There are many open source
jabber server implementations, I have been using
http://jabberd.jabberstudio.org/ at my place quite happily for 10 months
now. Search for jabberd srpms (look for 1.XX version and not version
2.XX, since version 2 came out only sometime back and does not have good
howtos on how to use it as yet ).

After you have have the srpms, have a look at the
http://jabberd.jabberstudio.org/1.4/docs/howto.html . They give you a
step by step process on how to install the jabber server. The doc
suggest that you use a pre built binary, but that binary kept crashing
on my system (iirc). If you can have those binaries working for you,
great. However if those do not work, you will have to compile the srpms
that you have downloaded above. the good thing about the SRPM is that it
comes with a very well commented conf file.

After you have the server running, you have to configure the jabber
clients on each PC that will use it. Miranda is a good jabber client and
so is gaim. Have been using both without any trouble.

Assume me as a
dummy on networking . First time in my life got the chance to work on
LAN ,
I hope your boss know about this :-)

Package: libapache-mod-dav
Vulnerability : null pointer dereference
Problem-Type : remote
Debian-specific: no
CVE ID : CAN-2004-0809

Julian Reschke reported a problem in mod_dav of Apache 2 in connection
with a NULL pointer dereference. When running in a threaded model,
especially with Apache 2, a segmentation fault can take out a whole
process and hence create a denial of service for the whole server.

For the stable distribution (woody) this problem has been fixed in
version 1.0.3-3.1.

For the unstable distribution (sid) this problem has been fixed in
version 1.0.3-10 of libapache-mod-dav and in version 2.0.51-1 of
Apache 2.

We recommend that you upgrade your mod_dav packages.

Package: net-acct
Vulnerability : insecure temporary file
Problem-Type : local
Debian-specific: no
CVE ID : CAN-2004-0851
Debian Bug : 270359

Stefan Nordhausen has identified a local security hole in net-acct, a
user-mode IP accounting daemon. Old and redundant code from some time
way back in the past created a temporary file in an insecure fashion.

For the stable distribution (woody) this problem has been fixed in
version 0.71-5woody1.

For the unstable distribution (sid) this problem has been fixed in
version 0.71-7.

We recommend that you upgrade your net-acct package.
