[ilugd] Subsys Dead, syslog-ng and SELinux

2005-05-10 Thread anandsha
I recently installed syslog-ng successfully on a FC3-SELinux enabled box.
Everything is fine except that:

# service syslog-ng status

syslog-ng dead but subsys locked

# ls --context /var/lock/subsys/syslog-ng

-rw--- root root root:object_r:var_lock_t syslog-ng

The root:object_r:var_lock_t should have been user_u:object_r:var_lock_t, and
that is what is causing syslog-ng daemon to die. Also, the file permissions
generally are 666.

One easy way is to switch off SELinux for syslog-ng, but is there a better
way?? Why are the permissions wrong??

Sorry, I had to re-post this, after I first posted at http://lug-delhi.org, the
on line web front end to the mailing list. The post did not appear more than 2
hours later, neither on the forum nor on the mailing list. Thought it to be
appropirate to risk a re-post.

[ilugd] [OT] Printfu in India

2005-05-10 Thread Sandip Bhattacharya
[x-posted]

I had blogged about prinfu today morn. I was pleasantly suprised when
Brandon Corbin - the person behind printfu.org, wrote to me saying that
he would be interested in providing such a service in India too.

Using Printfu, you can upload any large pdf at their website, pay some
money and get a binded covered printed manual in a day or two at your
doorstep. Beautiful for those large manuals and tutorials that you keep
downloading and have to read them on screen because they are too large
to print.

Is a service like printfu something that you would be interested in
using? I would, if the price is right. ;) Are there going to be printers
you know who would be interested in working with prinfu for such work?
The printer can be anywhere in India, but preferably near the metros so
that atleast metro to metro courier prices are reasonable.

I am attaching our conversation (chronologically from oldest to newest)
regarding this for your reference. Do mail either me or Brandon directly
if there are any printers you know.

Give us your PDF and a couple days later, youll have a black and white,
printed and comb bound book on your door step.

Damn, this is something I have been looking out for ages! How I wish
somebody offered such a service in Delhi! :(

Brandon's comment
--
If you could give me the contact information of a couple printers in
your area, I can then start making that an area we can PrintFu to.
Eventually I want to have Printers all over the US and other countries.

My Mail
--
Wow! That would be interesting! There are a number of printers nearby,
even though most of them are quite small setups. Any particular kind of
printers that will suit you?

Brandon's reply

Any printer that has the ability to do highspeed black and white
copying, and bind. Thats about it.

Thanks for your interest!
Brandon

ID: 200505-07

Synopsis

The libTIFF library is vulnerable to a buffer overflow, potentially
resulting in the execution of arbitrary code.

Background
==

libTIFF provides support for reading and manipulating TIFF (Tag Image
File Format) images.

Affected packages
=

---
 Package  /  Vulnerable  /  Unaffected
---
  1  media-libs/tiff3.7.2= 3.7.2

Description
===

Tavis Ormandy of the Gentoo Linux Security Audit Team discovered a
stack based buffer overflow in the libTIFF library when reading a TIFF
image with a malformed BitsPerSample tag.

Impact
==

Successful exploitation would require the victim to open a specially
crafted TIFF image, resulting in the execution of arbitrary code.

Workaround
==

There is no known workaround at this time.

Resolution
==

All libTIFF users should upgrade to the latest version:

# emerge --sync
# emerge --ask --oneshot --verbose =media-libs/tiff-3.7.2

References
==

Availability

This GLSA and any updates to it are available for viewing at
the Gentoo Security Website:

Security is a primary focus of Gentoo Linux and ensuring the
confidentiality and security of our users machines is of utmost
importance to us. Any security concerns should be addressed to
