Re: [ilugd] router on 6.2

2005-05-27 Thread SWAPNIL
Dear sir,

Thanks for you valuable information.

I have gone through the steps, but in this way all systems in my network
will directly access the internet if they add my server address in their
gateway.

I need to set some rules e.g.
From my network the machine with IP 192.168.1.200 can access only
www.mydomain.com directly using router
and for other domains it should be routed through the proxy server.

except this IP everybody in my network should be routed through squid proxy
server

what should I do for this type of situations ?
how can I get rules documentation of routing ?

Hi,

On RH6.2 you have to edit /etc/sysctl.conf and change the setting
net.ipv4.ip_forward to yes.

Then you have to use ipchains, as iptables was not availabe yet.

Use the following:
ipchains -A forward -s 192.168.0.0/24 -d 0/0 -j MASQ

This is assuming your private IP address is in the network 192.168.0.0

You can add this to the /etc/rc.d/init.d/network script under the start
section.

If you then issue the command /etc/rc.d/init.d/network restart it should
all be
OK

nat'ing is network address translation.

HTH.

28th -30th May, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India.

The Free Software, Free Society (FSFS) Conference, organized by Government and
civil society organizations from Brazil, Italy, Venezuela and India, is
scheduled for 28-30 May 2005 in the Southern Indian city of Thiruvananthapuram
(Trivandrum), the capital of the province of Kerala. The Conference is
primarily an attempt to initiate a South-South-North dialogue on the use of
Free Software as a useful paradigm for non-software realms and its role as an
instrument for development. In the process, the countries involved will share
their perspective and experiences in using Free Software.

Vision

Over two-and-a-half decades, Free Software has inspired an alternative approach
to creation, use and redistribution of software. The values of Free Software
has been the inspiration for other kind of intellectual content as well, as
illustrated, for example, by the Creative Commons initiative. Located at the
intersection of Free Software, Development and Society, the FSFS Conference
will examine the application of the Free Software model for the purpose of
evolving more equitable development and information sharing models for
humanity. In particular, the Conference will discuss the use of Free Software
for addressing issues of technology access and the digital divide and also
develop further the alternative paradigms for sharing intellectual content.

Re: [ilugd] router on 6.2

2005-05-27 Thread Shivkumar Jagannath
Hi,
I would suggest that you take the painless route to the router and try m0n0wall
(www.m0n0.ch/wall). Its written by an Indian guy called Dinesh Nair and is
based on the FreeBSD kernel.

You could also try shorewall (which gives you a better interface to write
iptables rules in)
or if you feel more adventurous try smoothwall (express is free i reckon).

I have been noticing from past some days that despite my PC having 256
megs RAM, just 130-150 megs are used 50-80 megs of swap is used.

Why is swap being used when my RAM is free? How can i make my Linux
use my RAM instead of swap, so i can utilize thats being left idle
(remaining 100 megs of RAM).
