[ilugd] FLOSS in schools... a syllabi for the Third Standard (eight/nine-year-old) student from India

Free software in schools. Download this from here

  From Farida Umrani [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I am working with Prof. Sridhar Iyer at Dept of Computer Science, IIT
Bombay on content development for school computer science based on
Edubuntu . We will have the content for elementary class ready in
2008. I am sending you a draft of a textbook for class I (the file is
bulky; hence split and send in two mails). [DOWNLOAD FROM URL ABOVE]
At present, I am implementing this curriculum in one of the pilot
schools. We have included Scratch as a programming language for
students in Grade 3 4. Currently we are focusing on elementary
classes and plan to scale it up in the next academic year.

We are facing difficulties in getting the teachers familiar with open
source. Most schools do not have a system administrator or even a
regular Internet connection to get the regular updates and prefer an
installable CD that gives them everything. But to a windows user, this
does not appear intuitive and hence they are put off by it. I wanted
to know about your experience with Goa schools? I have read that GCSP
trained engineering students and teachers. Did these students help the
local schools? We announced a training program for school teachers,
but got poor response and therefore deferred it. Did you face similar
problems? How did you deal with them?

I myself have a Psychology background... and it has taken me several
hours of work and reading up the forums to understand the installation
and getting all the dependencies right. However, what is encouraging
is that students have received the open source applications very well.
I hope to learn from your experience at Goa.

Subject: Memo to Indian Staff

MEMO TO INDIAN STAFF

In view of the large number of Indians working in the USA , UK and
many other countries with White People, it has become important for
Human Resources Department to issue directives to their Indian staff.

TO ALL HINDI-SPEAKING STAFF

It has been brought to our attention by several officials visiting our
corporate headquarters that offensive language is commonly used by our
Hindi-speaking staff. Such behavior, in addition to violating our
policy, is highly unprofessional and offensive to both visitors and
colleagues.

Staff will IMMEDIATELY adhere to the following rules:

1. Words like CHUTIYA, GANDU and other such expressions will not be
used for emphasis, no matter how heated the discussion. You will not
say CHUTIYE, AKKAL NAHI HAI KYA TEREKO when someone makes a mistake,
or MADAR CHOD, BHENCHOD when a major mistake has been made. All forms
derived from the verb CHOD are inappropriate in our environment.

2. No project manager, section head or administrator, under any
circumstances, will be referred to as GADHA or CHUTIYA . Lack of
determination will not be referred to as KAAMCHOR SAALA and neither
will persons who lack initiative be referred to as BHOSADIKAA or
MADARCHOD .

3. Unusual or creative ideas from your superiors are not to be
referred to as GAND FAADU, if a person is persistent, or if a task is
heavy to accomplish. In a similar way, do not use GAND FATI, if a
colleague is going through a difficult situation.

4. Furthermore, you must not say BHOSADE MEIN GAYA when matters become
complicated. When asking someone to leave you alone, you must not say
DIMAG KI MAA BHEN MAT KAR. Do not ever substitute 'May I help you?'
with BOL TERI GAND KAISE MARU.

5. When things get tough, an acceptable _expression such as 'We are
going through a difficult time' should be used, rather than MAA CHUDI
PADI HAI or GOTI MUH MEIN HAI.

6. No salary increase shall be ever referred to as KHAIRAAT BAATI JAA
RAHI HAI KYA. Under no circumstances should you call our elderly
corporate partners as BUDDHA KHOOSAT.

7. Last, but not least, after reading this memo, please do not say: YE
KAGAJ GAND PONCHNE KE LAAYAK BHI NAHI HAI.

We hope you will keep these directions in mind.

Sincerely,
Steve Rider

Mozilla Project Accepted for SoC

The Mozilla Project has been accepted to participate in the Google
Summer of Code.

The student application period opens in a week's time, on March 24th,
and itself only lasts a week. Therefore, we need to do two things before
then:

~ 1. Whip the proposed projects list into shape. Please continue to
brainstorm here. We're looking for more ideas than we've currently got.
if you suggested something earlier, check back to see if we have any
questions about your idea.
~ 2. Find some students. If you know of any, please encourage them to
check the project list and consider applying.
