Would you be interested in a discussion at the next ILUGD meet on the

give an exposition from my own

perspective, and whatever answers come out of the discussion can be,
say, posted on the Wiki as a FAQ or other global resource.

Topics that may be interesting to discuss include:

 - Distribution policies
 - Development policies
 - Money exchange policies
 - Attributions
 - Bundling
 - RPC/SOAP/equivalents
 - Patent provisions
 - Web service licensing

Good ideas.

This may not fall under the realm of Licences as in above. Please
include if you think it appropriate.
 - [Add your own]
  - Public Portals (developed using open standards)

Govt. and PSU portals are being developed by companies like TCS and
such. Some of these sites are begining to enforce authentication with
Digital Signatures (usb dongle). They are using some MS proprietary
technology that works only with WinXP and IE. This is tantamount to
the Govt. and PSUs endorsing a proprietary product and forcing it's
citizens to either buy a legit. Windows lic. or resort to piracy and
break the law.

Orgs. who work with Govt./PSU portals have raised this issue but with a
Linux desktop we cannot download/upload tenders (or whatever).

I am not conversant with the underlying technology. However, I am
confident that the above can be done using open standards, thereby not
forcing the citizens and organizations to purchase a Windows XP lic.

For starters, there should be a DIT (or an approp. Govt. body) policy
that requires every vendor, developing a portal that interarcts with
public at large, to use open standards and ensures that it works across
all the desktops, not just MS Windows.

Am curious...

How is this different from your (Raj Mathur) selling open source software
without giving the source code ?

You yourself mentioned that you do that whenever you get the chance and that
you even bill the customers and charge sales tax rather than service tax.

???

Maybe I am missing out something, but would appreciate a clarification...

[ilugd] distro name using lsb_release

2008-07-11 Thread Vikas Upadhyay
Hi All,
How can I have a generic way of knowing the name version of a distro?
As my work area is SLES RHEL, I thought of using */etc/issue (*or */etc/
issue.net) *or */etc/redhat-release *or */etc/SuSE-release
*
Another way is, using* *the command* lsb_release -d ,* which works even on
Hardy*.
*As I liked it more, so, my query changes to:
Can I assume lsb_release to be there on every Linux distro ?
I assume because LSB means Linux Standard Base and their web site says
*Currently
all major distributions comply with the LSB ...* (
http://www.linuxfoundation.org/en/LSB) and have another link to
https://www.linuxfoundation.org/lsb-cert/productdir.php?by_lsb

Seeking inputs.

Thanks in anticipation
Vikas Upadhyay

I'm not trolling; but all the same, I was wondering about the same when you
posted-- and it would be great to hear your perspective about the salient
points and contrasts.

Ofcourse, your saying I've never said that I sell FOSS without source code,
so set your mind at rest. does not actually clarify anything; nor does it
set anyone's mind to rest.

Look forward to hearing that perspective.

I'm not any Ubuntu GNU/Linux user, so I won't be of much help. But I think
you need to install gspca[1] driver from their repositories. It is
available in 'universe' section, so you need to enable Universe section
of repositories in your apt-get configuration.

Or, if you prefer latest, install from the sources on site.

It is a compilation of various data rescue tools. Most of these can be
accessed from the boot menu. It includes three mini-distributions -
Parted Magic, RIPLinuX and Toutou Linux (a French desktop distribution
based on Puppy Linux). The boot menu also provides a quick access to
Memtest86+ , Super Grub Disk, Nuke (a utility that safely erases hard
disk content) etc. Most of the utilities on the CD are provided in
their English versions.
