You may want to look at this. Intel 845 graphics cards have had a problem for the last year or so. http://fossplanet.com/f10/%5Bubuntu-x%5D-intel-845g-855gm-hangs-90191/ You may wish to disable desktop effects in case they are enabled. That may work on your system.
