-- Forwarded message -- From: "Noopur" Date: 15 Jan 2012 23:44 Subject: [Wikimediaindia-l] Wikipedia Delhi meetup-5 To: "Wikimedia India Community list" Dear all, Let me give you a brief update on things we did in Delhi to celebrate Wikipedia's 11th birthday :) To start with in the morning, Nitika had connected us with a photography group called Tassavurati run by Kapil Syal. Shiju, Subha and I went to meet them (12 of them) and made a small presentation on Commons. They were all very enthusiastic and wanted to share their images for free and thought this was a great platform for them. They plan for specific trips like covering Surajkund mela and marathons etc and could be useful. Some of them have already made an account and started tinkering around :) ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baul#Present_status) Back in the office, we had 12 people again! Since most of them were new or people with basic knowledge, Hisham was updating them on the variety of new programs that Wikimedia is doing in India. There was a student from IIT and another from Jamia. Both have expressed interest in organizing meetups, editathons and maybe a hackathon for their college LUGs. We hope to hear from them by next week and do something concrete before this month ends. There were also people from advanced research organizations and such. They have expressed interest in helping expand and network to build a strong community in Delhi. Mitra (User: MittyKomon) is a new editor who expressed interest in going to Jaipur literary festival and perhaps doing some outreach or at least getting photographs of all the celebrated literary figures coming there. We cut the super cool Wiki cake :P and took pictures. I loved the Google hangout bit, we should all do it more often (it's better than IRC logs :P) As Delhi SIG chair, it was heartening to see genuine interest and we hope to maintain this level of communication. The photos have been uploaded to Category:Wikipedia_11_in_India. Thank you, Warmly -- Noopur Raval Student Arts and Aesthetics Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi Ph: 9650567690 ___ Wikimediaindia-l mailing list wikimediaindi...@lists.wikimedia.org To unsubscribe from the list / change mailing preferences visit https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimediaindia-l ___ Ilugd mailing list Ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd

If that sytem is > broken, someone should be concerned! I agree. It depends on how a person gets the RHCE certificate. Most of my friends and known persons, just do a crash course on "How to crack RHCE?" for 5 days and win the exams. In my personal experience with interviewing those kind of persons for linux admin job for my company, 90% of RHCE people have only certificate, not the real knowledge or experience. There are some real hardworkers and real learners. Kudos to them. > > - There are quite a lot of jobs out there which have nothing to do with > admin at all. Remember that one only needs 1 admin to run many machines, > services, process instances; but there is always a need to write the code in > the first place. Thats right. But most of the RHCE people, have tons of fears on programming. They are ready run away even to read a piece of code. They think that admin is the easiest job and coding is the toughest one. Again, the above is my own experience on interviewing many RHCE holders. Not to hurt anyone. Thanks. Hope the OP can be a part of community by sharing his knowledge and experience. [ilugd] Ubuntu 10.04 Release Party at Kanchipuram
The Ubuntu release party was celebrated again after 6 months following the release of latest Ubuntu Linux version 10.04 at April 2010. The vision of these parties are to share the features of Linux to the general public. So far, Linux is in the hands of students, programmers and geeks. Bring it to public is the need of the hour. We, KanchiLUG team decided to celebrate a Ubuntu release party this time too, on June 6, 2010. Unlike last time, we hardly get time for this event as we have 2 major activities last week. 1. Programming bootcamp 2. Release of Ubuntu Manual in Tamil These made our days and nights busy and sleepless. :-) But still, we had a team for organizing release party. We approached various schools for the venue and finally got the famous “Pachaiyappan Hr.Sec School”. We printed pamphlet and circulated via local newspapers. We Invited “Ramadas (amachu) ” as Chief Guest. It was a nice evening with little drizzling. We were busy with arranging hall, fixing projectors, banners and audio systems. Around 3.30, the hall was getting filled with public. At 3.45, we started. Ramya Invited everyone. Arulalan started with a presentation of “History of Gnu/Linux”. Then, explained on “Open source and its concepts”. Rajkumar showed the beautiful compiz effects. Yasir explained “Why Linux?” Kabilan explained how Ubuntu born and how it is growing. Suresh demonstrated some 3d games like openarena, torcs and tuxracer. Balakrishnan explained that Installation is very easy and showed a demo on it. Tea and snacks were provided in the meantime. Malathi and Suji explained how they started their career with opensource at their college and how students can contribute to open source. They explained about their Tamil font creation project and Tamil spell checker project. The Chief Guest Ramadhas, started with his awesome speech. He explained how the proprietary world is making us as slave. The need of using opensource, the need of localizations etc. People got enlighted and understood the concepts of opensource. He released the Ubuntu CD and the “Ubuntu Manual in Tamil”. Mr. Anbu and Mrs. Umamaheswari Anbu, Shakthi ITI, received on behalf of students. Mr. Sundhar, Bank of India, received for public. Myself explained the job opportunities in the FOSS world. Arulalan introduced the activities of KanchiLUG. Requested the audience to join in mailing list. Shared the contact numbers for local support. The Q&A session was interesting and public raised lots of queries and we answered them all. With National Anthem, we ended the show at 6.45 pm. We had around 75 audience and show is a successful one. We thank Nandha Kumar, Vignesh, Akilan, Nagaraj, Rajeshwari, sathish, Arun who traveled from chennai to attend this event. You are welcome to download the Alpha version of “Ubuntu Manual” in Tamil at http://ubuntu-tam.org/avanam/lucid-lynx Still it need more fixes, we are working on that and will release a final version as soon as possible. [ilugd] KanchiLUG celebrates its first anniverary
It happened 1 year ago. *The birh of KanchiLUG*. I was talking to form a group of students to learn linux and form a LUG, to my brothers and their friends. Inspired by ChennaiLUG, We decided to have regular meetings, meetings and public events. Registered a mailing list at freelists.org so that anyone can join. Opened a blog kanchilug.wordpress.com to announce all our activities. Weekly Meetings. When we decided to meet every Sunday, even we had doubts on its continuity. But, our team made this possible. We had 45 meets. We had tough times on finding a place to meet. Kanchipuram, a temple city, gave a nice temple for us to meet. With a temple, where no electricity is given for public, we did demos for 1 hr with our laptop batteries. We needed more power. So moved to a Study Center “Siva Kalvi Nilaiyam”, where we studied our Tuition on our school days. Thanks for our masters. We had power, water and space. Weekend meetings were filled with tutorial sessions and demos. Mailing list was getting more members. We went to colleges and gave talks. We conducted Ubuntu Release Party. We published a 2010 calendar. You can see a glimpse of our 2009 acticities here. http://kanchilug.wordpress.com/2009-activities/ We have some goals for 2010. They are here. http://kanchilug.wordpress.com/2010-goals/ Yes. We have to reach more heights. We hope that we will do our best to give back to the open source community. Thanks a lot for the people around the globe for the support and encourage. The first anniversary was celebrated on March 28,2010 at arul’s home. We started the day with the translation of ubuntu-manual into tamil. Then, we had the Ubuntu Gloabal Bug Jam. We learnt how to report a bug and how to triage a bug. We all started on assigning proper packages to the Bugs. Then, the funtime started. Cake, snacks, and photo session. Well. It became one of the memorable days in the community life. ubuntu-manual translation is going on. Snacks Time. Dhasthageer with his ubuntu t-shirt. Tea Time. Ubuntu Logo with Tea Cups. Birthday Cake. Cake is for me only. My mom and dad cut cake. [ilugd] Network Seminar by Girish
Friends. This Saturday and Sunday, Girish gave a wonderful seminar on Networking Concepts. He covered very vast concepts and Topics. The IIT ICSR hall is so capable of handling more people. We expected about 200 people. But first 87 and second day about 30. He talked about tcp/ip, various protocols, crypto, email, spam etc. Honestly saying, I can not understand them fully. I simply watching what is going there. Some students were so brilliant to follow him and ask doubts. Mahadevan took care of Food, tea and snacks. Barathi tooks care of whole thing. Koushick and Noorul helped a lot. But, we missed noorul today. I dont know how others got the knowledge. I got only less things. I have to increase my level. Girish. You did a wonderful thing man. Two full days. Full talking. Take care on your health man. People gave a plenty of feedbacks. I hope girish learned a lot from this presentation. A lot of wishes for Girish. Keep Going.
