Yesterday's news, of Raj moving on, is shocking. I met him through
 ilugd

  he
helped organize. He was brutally honest and that made him special. He
  was
special because with those piercing words, he could get through to you
better. Yesterday night, I visited his drawing room, which played host
 to
many linux-dellhi events. Niyam playfully called it opium den. The
 opium
den was filled with people, Andrew, Gora and Friji. The trade-mark
 green
camouflage was lying life-less on the low diwan. For a second, I
  imagined a
cup of coffee and creme, which was kind of ritual commencement of
linux-delhi meetings, with Kishore bringing the coffee and Raj
 arranging
for cups and creme. The cup of coffee is not there any more, that table
  is
missing and more importantly Raj has checked out of the opium den.

Raj had a heart attack at ~7 pm, on 12/12/12. It was during a phone-call
with a client, who alerted Tirveni.

Tirveni got through to his neighbours who took him to the nearest
 hospital,
where, unfortunately, it was too late for any medical intervention.
 Friji,
visiting Delhi, and Gora also rushed to the hospital, but were only in
 time
to help the family with making arrangements for the morgue.

His body was cremated at 3:00 pm, today. Thereafter, those of us from
 ILUGD
who attended, repaired to Sanjha Chula, and reminisced about the
 occasions
gone by. Fitting, as Kishore later told me - Twenty years ago, when he
started a BBS out of Lajpat Nagar, the few who turned up went over to the
same place - the start of the tradition of meeting and eating that was to
  be ILUGD.

I got to know Raj seven years ago, when ILUGD was in transition from the
tangible meet-and-eat, to the intangible list-that-is-now-[ilugd]. Along
with Gora, Kishore and Mary, he proposed to seed the development of open
source software within a university environment. We coordinated a
 nascent
drug discovery software, bravely worked on by students largely from the
RKGIT, Ghaziabad. Thereafter, were our meetings that lead to the use of
 the
university as a base for initially Freedel, and later Freed.in.

His sudden passing is a shock and a loss. However, his life was full, and
rich with achievement. Besides the character traits of Brutal Honesty,
Man of Principles, Zero-Compromise, and his achievements to the FOSS
world, I also rate highly the fact that he has served as a magnet and
mentor for young hackers from the Delhi area, all of whom have gone on to
do well on the world stage. And his strong belief that FOSS was not a
charity or religion, but a philosophy and way of life, and livelihood,
 for
  an independent SME.

I shall miss the coffee-and-cream. The vibrant discussions on FOSS. And
generally hanging around with him listening to 70's rock, watching movies
on his larger screen monitor and occasionally lapsing into a life
 before
  the digital age.

IMHO, relaying should be controlled at the MTA level. All MTAs provide
control against open-relay.

In any case, if you specify source in iptables, then roaming users (with

Hi

Could you tell me how the calculation the “*Red hat Enterprise Linux server
5*” licenses, in other words per CPU or Per Core?

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 subscriptions (not licenses ) are per Server
(neither per CPU nor per Core).

Having said that, there are two variants of RHEL - RHEL 5 and RHEL 5 AP

RHEL 5 will only support a motherboard upto two sockets (each socket can
have any number of cores)
If you have a motherboard with more than two sockets, you will need to
procure a RHEL 5 AP subscription,

Re: [ilugd] Linux + Active Directory ?

2010-08-10 Thread Varad Gupta
Hi

All of the above can be handled by reading the doc above

From the above book itself :

In order to make the popular request for Samba to be an Active Directory
Server a reality, it is necessary to add to OpenLDAP, Kerberos, as well as
Samba, RPC calls that are not presently supported. The Samba Team has not
been able to gain critical overall support for all project maintainers to
work together on the complex challenge of developing and integrating the
necessary technologies. Therefore, if the Samba Team does not make it a
prior- ity to absorb Kerberos and LDAP functionality into the Samba project,
this dream request cannot become a reality. missing RPCs is not on the Samba
development roadmap. If it is not on the published roadmap, it cannot be
delivered anytime soon. Ergo, ADS server support is not a current goal for
Samba development. The Samba Team is most committed to permitting Samba to
be a full ADS domain member that is increasingly capable of being managed
 using Microsoft Windows MMC tools.

  - To make the server a Primary Domain Controller for the Windows network
  - so that windows boxes can login to the [xxxactive directoryxxx] SMB
domain.
  - Provide Samba shares
  - Using OpenLDAP for storing credentials and employee info

Absolutely - u cannot create AD controller, you can create NT style PDC/BDC
(All the points mentioned in the mail can be handled by NT style PDC/BDC
That is why i had mentioned SMB domain and not active directory domain

Re: [ilugd] Courier Authentication Library Problem

2009-03-23 Thread Varad Gupta
Hi Goutam

I have never used the RPMS as such but compiled from source. Can tell
you the files to lookup- their locations might differ in a RPM install.

there should be two files -
a) one for courier-authlib daemon config
b) another for courier-authlib and ldap config (which will conatin the
mappings between your ldap and authentication attributes desired by you)

As a first step -

Pls increase the debug level in the courier-authlib daemon file
- /etc/authlib/authdaemonrc (in my case - the location could be
different in yours)
set DEBUG_LOGIN=2

(By default the logging is done in maillog, so pls tail that file for
errors)

Also pls check your /var/log/messages

If you see an error there, pls post the same

Secondly -

check the ldap mapping in /etc/authlib/authldaprc(again your location
might be different)

finally since this is a permission error as it appears, pls check
permissions on your ldap folder (if default RH- /var/lib/ldap)

Best Wishes

order. But I am finding that the command authtest is failing with the error

Re: [ilugd] Courier Authentication Library Problem

2009-03-23 Thread Varad Gupta
Another thing you could check. Struck me while going to the office -

Pls check the permissions on the authdaemon socket. Maybe the
permissions are not sufficient.

Generally the location fo the socket(unless explicitly changed) should
be - /var/spool/authdaemond/socket or /var/spool/authdaemon/socket
(I do not exactly remember whether the folder name is authdaemond or
authdaemon)

Do ensure that others apart from the owners can also rwx on the socket

Best Wishes

Re: [ilugd] Oracle 9i installation on linux

2009-03-19 Thread Varad Gupta
Hi Kamal

A couple of things =

a) Are you doing this remotely or are you doing this on the console of
the physical server directly?
b) have you disabled Client access control for X?
(simplest way to do that - as root give the command = xhost +)
