Re: [ilugd] Data card support on linux

Dear All,
Do you have any idea regarding support of datacard. I have TATA USB
 datacard.Is driver available for this?

Step by step I have found that running tail -f /var/log/messages in
a terminal tells you if the device is recognised and as what. Tata
thingy is recognised as ttyACM0 while the Reliance old key was
recognised as ttyUSB0

After this it is simple matter of configuring the dialer software
kppp/wvdial/etc. with username password dialing number and init
string. Personally on Ubuntu/debian I prefer pppconfig with pon and
poff commands.

Look up archives for init strings of various devices.

It works out of the box on any decent distribution. I have
been using it for almost 2 years now ( on Kubuntu and OpenSuse ). I
am mailing you while being connected via a data card, and I am pretty
much connected whole day using the same thing. Works like a charm
across the country ( if there is TATA network ). I know for sure that
there are others - some in this list even - who use it. Karunakar uses
to the plug2surf thingie, iirc. Kartik and Anurag uses it as well. And
between us - we have used 3 distros - debian, kubuntu, opensuse. Not
sure if Anurag figured out how to get it working with FreeBSD as well.

No extra driver installation required - yeah but you have
to convince the installation dude that you don't want to install
drivers when he insists on doing so :). For dialing, it works with
wvdial, kppp, knetworkmanager.

   Cheers!

Pradeepto
